Kevin Sinfield Exceeds Fundraising Goal Ahead of Final Marathons
Kevin Sinfield has surpassed his ambitious fundraising target of £777,777 with two ultra-marathons still remaining in his challenge. The former rugby league star set out to complete seven ultra-marathons in seven days to raise money for research into motor neurone disease (MND). As of December 5, 2023, Sinfield’s fundraising total reached an impressive £813,000.
This remarkable achievement has drawn praise from figures across the sports community, including Steve Borthwick, the head coach of the England rugby union team. Borthwick, who joined Sinfield on his fifth run through Cumbria, described the fundraising efforts as “inspirational” and highlighted the sense of community that Sinfield fosters through his work. “What Kev and his team are doing to make the MND community feel loved and cared for is incredible,” he stated.
Sinfield, aged 45, has acknowledged the physical toll of his challenge, admitting that “some bits aren’t moving like they should.” He is set to complete two more grueling runs, one across Scotland on December 6 and a poignant final leg in Leeds on December 7. This journey is particularly meaningful for Sinfield, as he dedicated this challenge to his late friend and former teammate, Rob Burrow, who passed away last year after a five-year battle with MND.
Reflecting on the enormity of his undertaking, Sinfield shared, “We know it’s going to be tough. But it’s nothing compared with the challenges people with MND, their families, and carers face every day.” He emphasized that each mile run is intended to demonstrate love and support for those affected by the disease and to raise crucial funds for ongoing care and research.
Sinfield’s dedication to this cause is evident in his history of fundraising efforts, having raised over £11 million for MND research through similar challenges. He plans to undertake the seven ultra-marathons again next year, further committing to support the cause for the rest of his life. This year’s challenge is especially significant as it matches the number seven, which Burrow wore on his jersey.
In recognition of Sinfield’s tireless work, the Daily Star has launched a campaign advocating for his efforts to be honored with a knighthood. Nearly 50,000 people have signed an online petition in support of this initiative. Notably, darts champion Luke Littler, just 18 years old, has also contributed to the cause, donating thousands of pounds from his winnings.
Rob Burrow’s widow, Lindsey Burrow, has expressed her belief that Sinfield’s contributions are deserving of one of Britain’s highest honors. The impact of Sinfield’s fundraising continues to resonate, as he inspires countless individuals to contribute to a cause that affects many lives.
For those interested in supporting Sinfield’s ongoing efforts, additional information can be found on his 7 in 7 Challenge website. As the final days of this significant challenge unfold, the rugby community and supporters everywhere continue to rally behind Sinfield, demonstrating the power of collective action in the face of adversity.
