Es Devlin Unveils Rotating “Library of Us” on Miami’s Faena Beach

British designer Es Devlin has launched a stunning new installation titled “Library of Us” along the shores of Faena Beach in Miami, coinciding with the annual Miami Art Week. This ambitious project spans 50 feet and features a rotating triangular structure housing 2,500 titles, celebrating literature, community, and the natural rhythms of the environment.

As part of the Faena Arts program, the “Library of Us” is not just a visual spectacle but an interactive experience. The installation is adorned with a vibrant 34-foot-long LED text strip that illuminates the surrounding landscape. Every ten minutes, the library spins on a metallic plinth, casting colorful reflections on the water below, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors seeking respite from the bustling festivities of the art fair.

Visitors can engage with the library by seating themselves at its two-ring circular table. This design invites a sense of communal interaction, as new passages drift through the air, generating a poetic ambiance that fosters connection among those present. The experience is further enriched by a 250-excerpt audio score, narrated by Devlin herself, which adds a layer of sonic depth to the installation. The audio features a blend of memories, literary fragments, and music, creating a harmonious backdrop that resonates with the ebb and flow of the tides.

In a noteworthy initiative, the project is in partnership with Penguin Random House. Upon the installation’s closure on December 7, 2023, all 2,500 books will be donated to public libraries, schools, and community organizations across Miami. This effort not only enhances accessibility to literature but also reflects a commitment to fostering a love for reading within the community.
