Mossley Hill Hospital Opens After Five-Year Delay, Enhancing Care
The new Mossley Hill Hospital has officially opened its doors, five years behind schedule, following an investment of £80 million. The facility, designed to enhance mental health care in Liverpool, began welcoming patients after construction was completed in October 2023. This delayed project was initially slated to commence operations in 2020 after planning permission was granted in 2017.
Construction faced significant setbacks, including the demolition of the old hospital, which only concluded in December 2021. Revised proposals received approval from the Liverpool City Council planning committee in 2022, allowing work to begin in early 2024. The build took approximately 30 months, during which residents voiced concerns about the “disruption, filth, and noise” from construction activities.
The new hospital features 80 beds, significantly fewer than the original proposal by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. The facility aims to replace dormitory-style accommodations for mental health patients in Liverpool, providing a more private environment. It offers care services that were previously located at the Broadoak Unit in Broadgreen Hospital and Windsor House in Toxteth. However, the revised plans no longer include services from the STAR Unit at Rathbone Hospital, leading to a decrease in the number of beds available.
Modern Facilities for Enhanced Patient Care
Mossley Hill Hospital is designed with four single-sex wards, each featuring en-suite bedrooms, a patient café, and landscaped garden areas. The environment aims to foster recovery and well-being for patients. Lyndsey Kelly, Deputy Director of Mersey Care’s Mental Health Inpatients, emphasized the importance of creating a supportive space for recovery.
“Our staff have moved out of facilities that were no longer appropriate for our patients,” Kelly stated. “With this new build, we’re giving people the space to recover and engage in meaningful, therapeutic group activities.” The design includes dedicated areas for both patients and staff, including a purpose-built gym, which is expected to cultivate a sense of community within the facility.
Moreover, the hospital aims to be family-friendly, providing excellent facilities for visitors, including carers and young children. The environment is intended to feel warm and welcoming, ensuring that everyone—patients, staff, and visitors—feels included in the community.
Funding and Future Outlook
Part of the funding for the hospital came from Public Dividend Capital (PDC) provided by the Department of Health. Dr. Anna Richman, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Mersey Care, praised the facility’s design. “This is a fantastic new facility,” she remarked. “The four single-sex wards with en-suite bedrooms mean no dormitory accommodation. It is an amazing, light building that will greatly benefit our staff and service users, as the environment plays a crucial role in recovery and well-being.”
The opening of Mossley Hill Hospital marks a significant step forward in mental health care for Liverpool, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve facilities and enhance the quality of care available to patients. With its modern amenities and thoughtful design, the hospital is poised to make a positive impact on the community it serves.
