Gordon Lyons MLA Tours Accessible Housing Development in Carrickfergus
On March 12, 2024, Gordon Lyons MLA visited the development site of an accessible bungalow scheme at McKeen’s Avenue in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. This initiative, led by Woven, a prominent provider of social housing in the region, aims to enhance housing options for individuals with accessibility needs.
Progress Update on Accessible Housing
During his visit, Lyons examined the ongoing construction work and spoke with representatives from Woven about their efforts to address the growing demand for accessible homes. The project is designed to provide modern, fully equipped bungalows that cater to the needs of residents with disabilities.
Woven has been proactive in developing affordable housing solutions across Northern Ireland, focusing on inclusivity and accessibility. The McKeen’s Avenue project is a significant step forward in meeting these goals. “We are committed to creating homes that everyone can enjoy,” said a Woven spokesperson. “This development is a testament to our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all residents.”
Community Impact and Future Plans
The initiative at McKeen’s Avenue is expected to deliver over 50 accessible bungalows upon completion, providing vital housing options for families and individuals who require tailored living environments. The project not only addresses immediate housing needs but also aims to foster a more inclusive community.
Lyons highlighted the importance of such developments, stating, “Access to suitable housing is a fundamental right. Projects like these demonstrate our commitment to ensuring everyone has a place to call home.” The government has been supporting social housing initiatives to tackle the housing crisis in Northern Ireland, and the McKeen’s Avenue scheme is a key part of that strategy.
Completion of the project is anticipated for late 2024, with plans for additional developments in other areas of Carrickfergus and beyond. Woven intends to continue partnering with local authorities to expand their efforts in providing accessible housing solutions.
The visit by Lyons not only underscored the significance of accessibility in housing but also reinforced the collaborative efforts between the government and social housing providers to create impactful community developments across Northern Ireland.
