A significant rescue operation unfolded on December 9, 2023, after a reindeer escaped from a Christmas event in Formby, Merseyside. The incident prompted a coordinated response involving the Royal Marines, Merseyside Police, and HM Coastguard, who worked together to locate the missing animal.

The reindeer fled during a festive celebration, triggering concerns that it might wander into the River Mersey. According to the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust, rescue teams began their search on Formby beach after the animal had been missing for several hours. As night fell, visibility decreased, leading to heightened urgency in the search efforts.

Rescue Teams Swing into Action

Merseyside Police had been tracking the reindeer but lost sight of it as darkness set in. Fearing for the animal’s safety, the Southport Quads team and Coastguard personnel were called to assist. Utilizing thermal binoculars, the quad team successfully located the reindeer on the beach, although capturing it proved challenging.

The rescue attempts were carefully coordinated. Southport Offshore Rescue Trust stated on social media, “As darkness fell, our quad team located the reindeer on the beach. Although capture proved difficult, the team successfully shepherded the animal into the sand dunes at Altcar Rifle Range, where a police drone maintained watch.”

With the reindeer safely contained, a veterinarian arrived to assist in securing the animal. The presence of the Royal Marines helped ensure that the operation proceeded smoothly and safely.

Successful Capture Ensures Holiday Cheer

After considerable effort, the reindeer was eventually calmed and secured. The Crosby Coastguard Rescue Team confirmed that, thanks to the efforts of multiple agencies, the situation was resolved without incident. They noted, “Our colleagues at HM Coastguard Southport and Southport Offshore Rescue Trust were tasked to assist Merseyside Police. Thankfully, Christmas is saved thanks to all agencies involved.”

The successful conclusion of the rescue mission highlights the importance of collaboration among emergency services in ensuring public safety, even during festive events. The reindeer is now safely back in custody, allowing the festivities to continue without further incident.
