Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, has been crowned as Miss Universe 2025 during a ceremony held in Bangkok, Thailand. Her victory has sparked significant backlash and claims of bias, with critics labeling her as the “most hated” titleholder in the pageant’s history. The controversy began when fashion director and pageant producer Concon Siñel expressed his discontent regarding the results, suggesting that Bosch’s win could lead to divisiveness within the organization.

In a post on his Facebook account, Siñel shared a photo of Bosch with the caption, “The Most Hated Miss Universe?” He indicated that upon arriving in Bangkok, he expected a “drama-filled and most controversial” event, and felt validated after Bosch’s win, which many observers described as predictable. Social media reactions have been overwhelmingly negative, with users expressing dissatisfaction over the judging process. One commenter noted, “Nawat is being Nawat. But Miss U became biased before in LatAm… Too unacceptable.”

The scrutiny surrounding Bosch’s victory is partly attributed to a prior incident where she confronted Nawat Itsaragrasil, the Miss Universe organization’s director, during an official event. Weeks before the pageant, Bosch reportedly walked out of a venue after an alleged public reprimand from Nawat. This incident garnered her support from fellow contestants and fans, as well as public backing from Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico. She emphasized the importance of women standing up for themselves.

Despite the support, speculation has emerged that Bosch was awarded the crown to counteract the controversy stemming from her earlier confrontation with Nawat. Notably, Nawat attended the Miss Universe event and shared images from the venue, further complicating the narrative surrounding Bosch’s crowning. Following her win, he posted a cryptic message on social media stating, “A billion words that cannot be said.”

When approached for comment by the BBC regarding the outcome, Nawat stated, “We leave it to the viewers at home to judge… people everywhere can make their own assessment.” His ambiguous remarks added to the already charged atmosphere.

Adding to the controversy, former Miss Universe judge Omar Harfouch alleged that Bosch’s victory was predetermined, claiming that she was aware of her win a day before the final event. He stated, “I, Omar Harfouch, declared yesterday exclusively on American HBO, 24 hours before the Miss Universe final, that Miss Mexico would win—because Miss Universe owner Raúl Rocha is in business with Fatima Bosch’s father,” as reported by ABS-CBN News.

The backlash has resonated particularly in the Philippines, a significant market for the Miss Universe pageant, where users on social media trended the hashtag “#Mexicook,” suggesting that the results were manipulated. Comments from Filipino users included “Miss Mexicook Universe…” highlighting their discontent.

As criticism continues to mount, it remains to be seen how Bosch’s reign will develop amid the accusations and scrutiny. The outcome of this year’s pageant has sparked discussions about fairness and integrity within the Miss Universe organization, raising questions about the future of the competition and its ability to regain public trust.
