The 21st International Actor’s Festival in Niksic captivated theatre enthusiasts with a compelling performance by the renowned Zvezdara Theatre. On the third evening of the festival, the audience was treated to an engaging nearly two-hour presentation of “Udovica živog čovjeka,” a comedic tale of family dynamics written and directed by Dušan Kovačević.

The play features talented actors such as Jelena Đokić, Nela Mihailović, Miodrag Krstović, Sunčica Milanović, Anđelka Simić, and Dušan Tomic. Their performances intricately weave together themes of fate, illness, suffering, and forgiveness, culminating in a poignant tragedy.

Jelena Đokić, who plays the lead role of Marta, a professor at a medical faculty, described the narrative as a “sad and moving story, an open wound from the very first moment, from the moment we step on stage until the end of the performance.” She emphasized the emotional weight of the drama, stating, “It bleeds continuously, which is incredibly difficult to watch, especially since this is strictly a drama.”

Kovačević is known for his ability to infuse heavy and passionate stories with humor, creating a balance that allows audiences to feel better amidst difficult themes. The family at the center of the play reflects everyday realities many people experience, making it relatable for audiences.

Mihailović, who portrays a character entangled in conflicts, noted that the issues explored in the play resonate with common pressures faced in daily life. “The beauty of acting in this piece is that Kovačević has crafted a narrative that makes us feel as though we have peered into the lives of our neighbors,” she explained.

The play touches on various pressing themes that affect society, with Krstović highlighting the breadth of topics that “Udovica živog čovjeka” addresses. He remarked, “In this piece, many themes that weigh on us daily are touched upon, and that is where the beauty of acting lies.”

Mihailović added that the current state of life in the region, and globally, has outpaced even the imaginations of the greatest artists. “What we are living, what is happening to us in Serbia, here with you, in the region, and globally, has surpassed and negatively influenced our creativity,” she stated.

As the festival continues, the impact of “Udovica živog čovjeka” serves as a reminder of the profound connection between art and life, leaving audiences reflecting on their own experiences long after the curtain falls.
