Montenegro Summons Russian Ambassador Over Controversial Remarks
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro summoned the Russian Ambassador to Montenegro, Aleksander Lukašik, on November 17, 2025, following inappropriate statements made by the ambassador in recent media appearances. The ministry characterized these remarks as a blatant and unacceptable interference in Montenegro’s internal matters.
The invitation for discussion stemmed from comments made by Lukašik after the Montenegrin Parliament adopted a decision to join the NATO mechanism for providing security assistance and training to Ukraine (NSATU). His critical remarks regarding an interview with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, published in the French newspaper La Croix, were particularly noted by officials in Podgorica.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such actions and criticisms are entirely unacceptable. The statement emphasized that Montenegro will not tolerate any threats to the dignity of its institutions. The Russian ambassador was clearly informed that similar messages in the future would be considered deliberate hostile actions, prompting appropriate responses from the Ministry in line with international norms.
Montenegro expects full respect for its institutions and officials from the Russian Embassy. The ministry reiterated that Montenegro conducts its foreign policy based on its own national and strategic interests, defined by its foreign policy priorities, including NATO membership and commitment to the European Union accession process.
The summoning of Lukašik highlights ongoing tensions between Montenegro and Russia, particularly regarding Montenegro’s alignment with Western military alliances and its stance on regional security matters. As NATO expands its role in Eastern Europe, the dynamics between these nations continue to evolve, reflecting broader geopolitical shifts in the region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its commitment to protecting Montenegro’s sovereignty and upholding its international obligations. The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance that Montenegro seeks to maintain in its diplomatic relations, particularly with nations that have historically exerted influence in the Balkans.
As the situation develops, it will be crucial to monitor both the responses from the Russian government and any further statements from Montenegrin officials regarding their foreign policy direction in light of these recent events.
