Disney Destiny Launches with Groundbreaking Projection Mapping
The launch of the Disney Destiny cruise ship has made waves in the entertainment and maritime industries, featuring a stunning projection mapping display during its unveiling ceremony. This event, which took place at Port Everglades, Florida, is recognized as the largest moving object to be projection mapped and tracked, showcasing innovative technology and artistry.
To create this impressive visual spectacle, the team utilized 30 laser projectors and four media servers to deliver a resolution of over 6,840 x 1,200. A comprehensive setup involved 15 infrared cameras and 38 infrared emitters, along with more than one mile of fiber-optic and network cabling. The project received significant support from VYV Corporation, known for its advanced Photon media server, which excels at projecting onto moving and irregular surfaces.
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, Aaron Counterman, a video systems design manager at Disney Live Entertainment, praised the collaboration on the project. He noted, “Projector calibration, alignment, and content adjustments were completed with an extremely tight time frame and wouldn’t have been possible without the great minds from the VYV Corporation. There were so many talented people involved in this achievement.”
The projection mapping of the Disney Destiny is not the first instance of a cruise ship serving as a canvas for large-scale visual displays. Previous events include the naming ceremony of the MSC World Europa in Doha in 2022 and the mapping of the Aurora cruiser battleship in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2017. More recently, the Minghua cruise ship at Sea World Shekou in Shenzhen, China, was also projection mapped in 2023. Notably, the previous ships were either moored or landlocked, making the Disney Destiny’s live mapping while afloat a significant milestone.
The ceremony, which embraced a hero and villains theme, brought to life beloved scenes from iconic productions such as Hercules, The Lion King, Frozen, Black Panther, and Pirates of the Caribbean, alongside striking images of Disney villains. This thematic presentation was complemented by a spectacular drone display and live music, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere of the event.
The Disney Destiny is the third ship in Disney Cruise Line’s Wish-class vessels, following the Disney Wish launched in 2022 and the upcoming Disney Treasure, set for release in 2024. Weighing in at 144,000 tons, the ship represents an investment of approximately $900 million at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. It features 1,254 cabins, with the capacity to accommodate up to 4,000 guests.
Looking ahead, the Disney Destiny is scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage on November 20, 2023. The inaugural journey will include four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Western Caribbean, departing from Fort Lauderdale. As interest in immersive experiences continues to grow, the launch of the Disney Destiny may set new standards in the cruise industry, blending entertainment and technology in unprecedented ways.
