Landlord Faces Investigation Over St George’s Cross on Pub
A pub landlord in Pewsey, Wiltshire, is under investigation by the local council after complaints about a large St George’s Cross painted on the exterior of his establishment. The complaint, reportedly from an anonymous local, suggested that the decoration made the pub appear similar to “the headquarters of the National Front.”
Jerry Kunkler, who has operated the Moonrakers Inn since 1981, initially painted the red cross on the white building in 2016 ahead of the UEFA European Championship. He chose to repaint it in 2022 for the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, expressing his patriotic sentiments and desire to create a welcoming environment for sports fans.
In response to the complaint, Kunkler emphasized his long-standing commitment to creating a family-friendly atmosphere at the pub. He stated, “We painted it for the first time in 2016 for the Euros… I thought I was going to bring the support here.” He continued, “I have always run a family pub… It is an English supporting club. I have always been an England fan.”
The pub, which has been a source of inspiration for the award-winning play Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth, is situated in a Grade II listed building. As such, any changes to its exterior may require listed building consent. Adrian Foster, the cabinet member for planning at Wiltshire Council, confirmed that the council would investigate the matter in line with its planning enforcement policy.
Kunkler has also hosted numerous events celebrating British culture, including the Queen’s Jubilee. He expressed surprise at the complaint, noting his pub’s efforts to be inclusive and family-oriented. “It was a bit strange to get that sort of email, but I am going to have to apply the correct way,” he remarked.
The council’s investigation highlights the importance of adhering to local planning regulations, particularly in conservation areas where historical buildings are protected. As the inquiry progresses, local residents and patrons of the Moonrakers Inn await the outcome, which may influence the future of this popular community venue.
