Miss Universe Contestants Walk Out in Protest Over Judge’s Remarks
The recent Miss Universe competition witnessed a dramatic walkout by contestants following a controversial incident involving a judge’s remarks directed at Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch. The event took place during the sashing ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand, and has since been described as a pivotal moment in the history of the pageant.
The situation escalated when Nawat Itsaragrisil, the executive director of Miss Universe, addressed Bosch in a manner that many found disrespectful. Reports indicate that he called Bosch “dumb” while demanding that she show him “respect.” This comment sparked outrage among the contestants present, leading to a mass exit from the venue.
Bosch, aged 26, attempted to defend herself during the confrontation. When she voiced her concerns, Itsaragrisil interrupted her, insisting, “I’m still talking, listen.” In response, she asserted, “I have a voice. You’re not respecting me as a woman.” The tension in the room grew palpable when security personnel were called to escort Bosch out of the ceremony.
As the incident unfolded, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, the newly crowned Miss Universe and the first contestant from Denmark to win the title, chose to stand in solidarity with Bosch. Theilvig’s decision to walk out alongside her fellow contestants was hailed as a powerful statement against disrespect and a show of unity among women.
Gasps filled the venue as the walkout commenced. Itsaragrisil was heard repeatedly demanding that the contestants “stop” and “sit down,” yet many chose to leave. The incident, captured on video, quickly went viral on social media, garnering widespread admiration for the contestants’ display of empowerment and solidarity.
In the aftermath, Raúl Rocha, president of the Miss Universe organization, issued a statement condemning the remarks made by Itsaragrisil. He emphasized the importance of respect and dignity towards women, stating, “I will not allow the values of respect and dignity toward women to be violated.” Rocha added that Itsaragrisil had forgotten what it means to be a genuine host, highlighting the obligation to support and assist all delegates throughout the competition.
The fallout from this incident has ignited discussions about the treatment of women in beauty pageants and the broader implications of such remarks in public forums. Contestants and supporters have taken to social media, praising the walkout as an act of integrity and courage, which they hope will inspire change within the pageant community.
The incident has also sparked reflections on the role of pageants in promoting empowerment and respect for women. As the Miss Universe organization continues to navigate the aftermath, the focus remains on fostering a culture of mutual respect and support for all participants in future competitions.
