Shetland Licensing Board Warns of Reviews Over Late Fees
The Shetland Licensing Board has announced that reviews will be conducted for two local establishments if they do not settle their overdue annual licence fees. During a meeting held on October 2, 2023, board members discussed the situation regarding several premises that failed to meet the payment deadline of October 1, 2023.
Despite reminders sent to the establishments, it was reported that seven premises did not pay their fees on time. As of the meeting, outstanding amounts remained for two of those establishments: Herrislea House Hotel with an overdue fee of £280, and Tagon Stores owing £220. One of the premises indicated intentions to make the payment soon, while the status of the other remained uncertain.
Shetland Islands Council lawyer Paul Wishart emphasized the mandatory nature of these fees, stating, “There’s no two ways about it, they just have to pay.” The urgency of the situation prompted board members to agree on a course of action consistent with previous decisions. If the two premises do not remit the outstanding payments before the next licensing board meeting, a review of their licenses will be initiated.
Shetland Central representative Catherine Hughson remarked that license holders should be “well aware” of their legal obligations regarding timely payments. To prevent future occurrences, the board also resolved to send reminders to other premises that submitted their annual fees late, stressing the importance of adhering to payment deadlines.
The board’s commitment to enforcing these regulations underscores the significance of compliance in local business operations. Ensuring that establishments meet their licensing obligations is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the licensing system in Shetland.
