Urgent Alert for Dog Owners Amid Rising Canine Virus in the UK

Dog owners in the UK are urged to remain vigilant as a canine virus known as kennel cough spreads across the country. This infectious bronchitis, caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses, leads to a range of symptoms and, in severe cases, can persist for up to six weeks.
According to Daniella Dos Santos, a senior veterinarian at the UK’s largest veterinary care provider, IVC Evidensia, kennel cough presents with a persistent, hacking cough. Additional symptoms can include retching, gagging, a runny nose, sneezing, and in more severe instances, fever and loss of appetite.
IVC Evidensia emphasizes that while kennel cough typically lasts between one and three weeks, some symptoms may endure for an extended period. Owners should seek veterinary advice if their dog exhibits worsening symptoms, particularly if they experience nasal discharge, a lack of appetite, or noticeable lethargy.
Puppies, elderly dogs, and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk for complications. Daniella Dos Santos noted that kennel cough can potentially develop into pneumonia, highlighting the need for careful monitoring in these vulnerable groups.
Dogs can contract kennel cough through direct contact with infected animals or via contaminated surfaces such as food bowls and toys. Furthermore, dogs that are stressed, malnourished, or frequently exposed to cigarette smoke and dust are more susceptible to the virus.
In light of the virus’s highly contagious nature, owners are advised to isolate infected dogs from others during the symptomatic period and for two to three weeks afterward. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect dogs from kennel cough, and owners should consult their veterinarians about including this vaccine in their pets’ healthcare plans.
While there is no specific test for kennel cough, veterinarians can diagnose the condition based on observable symptoms during an examination. In terms of treatment, if a dog is otherwise healthy and lives in a clean, well-ventilated environment, recovery is typically expected within three weeks without additional veterinary intervention.
Vets may prescribe anti-inflammatories to alleviate airway inflammation and manage high fevers. In cases where the infection is severe, antibiotics may also be recommended.
As the kennel cough virus continues to spread, it is essential for dog owners to stay informed and take proactive steps to safeguard their pets’ health.
