Sonja Ražnatović Celebrates Award-Winning Novel “Kismet”
A celebration of literature unfolded at the University of Montenegro as the award-winning novel “Kismet” by Sonja Ražnatović was showcased following its recognition in the FUNK competition 2024 for the best unpublished novel in Montenegro. The event took place in the lobby of the technical faculties, where Ražnatović’s work was highlighted among a competitive field.
Before the promotion of “Kismet”, awards were presented to other finalists. Perica Jokić received third place for his manuscript “Hollywood, Bre”, while Ratko Radunović secured second place for his novel “Pljačka: socijalni krimić.” The jury, led by Jelena Knežević, praised Ražnatović’s novel for its unique blend of personal narrative and social commentary, distinguishing it from the 27 submissions received.
Exploring Themes of Fate and Identity
During a discussion with Professor Knežević, she elaborated on the core themes of “Kismet.” The title, which draws from the concept of fate, reflects a narrative that weaves together elements of a coming-of-age story and a family saga set in the culturally diverse northern region of Montenegro. At its heart is the character Hatidža, a woman who emerges from the patriarchal environment of Plav, pursues her studies in Sarajevo, and ultimately finds herself in exile, navigating her own path amidst predetermined expectations.
Knežević described Hatidža as a character who embodies the silent strength of women in her community. “Hatidža is a woman who seemingly lives quietly, yet in that silence, she carries the entire history of this region,” she stated. “I built her layer by layer—like a mind that remembers what generations before her could not articulate.”
The narrative also incorporates the experiences of mothers and daughters, highlighting the invisible yet crucial roles women play in familial structures within patriarchal societies. Knežević noted that Hatidža’s journey represents the internal landscape of the Balkans, capturing the complexities of cultural identity and tradition.
A Bridge Between Cultures
Ražnatović emphasized that her novel serves as a bridge between different cultures, religions, and languages. Through the love story of Hatidža and Dušan, the book not only explores personal relationships but also addresses societal differences.
The promotion of “Kismet” marks a significant moment in Montenegrin literature, showcasing the potential for storytelling to transcend boundaries and foster understanding. The work stands out as a testament to the power of narrative in reflecting and shaping cultural identities, inviting readers to engage with its themes of fate and choice in a richly woven tapestry of human experience.
As the evening progressed, the audience engaged with Ražnatović, discussing the intricate layers of her storytelling and the pressing questions it raises about identity and belonging in a divided landscape. The event underscored the importance of literature in bridging gaps and fostering dialogue in an increasingly complex world.
