Health Expert Urges Parents to Watch for Key Symptoms in Virus Surge
A child health expert is advising parents to remain vigilant for specific symptoms as cases of chickenpox and other viral infections rise during the autumn and winter months. Kate Lewis, a Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioner at St John & St Elizabeth Hospital, emphasizes the importance of recognizing persistent rashes, fevers, and changes in behaviour in children. With seasonal illnesses becoming more prevalent in nurseries and classrooms, she urges parents not to overlook these warning signs.
“Parents are experts in their own children,” said Kate Lewis. “If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always worth getting checked – that gut feeling can make all the difference.” As infections such as chickenpox, hand, foot and mouth disease, and strep throat increase, Lewis is sharing her insights to help parents navigate the challenges posed by these illnesses.
Understanding the Symptoms
During this time of year, children often exhibit viral symptoms, including sore throats and rashes on their hands, feet, and mouths. Kate Lewis notes that there is typically a spike in chickenpox cases during the autumn and spring months, along with a notable increase in hand, foot and mouth disease. Additionally, conditions like tonsillitis and strep throat, which can mimic viral infections, also see higher incidence rates.
“Initially, it can be challenging for healthcare professionals to distinguish between viral and bacterial infections,” Lewis explained. This overlap in symptoms makes it crucial for parents to closely monitor their children for key warning signs.
“If children display one or more of these red flags, it’s time to seek medical advice,” Kate Lewis advised. Parents should consider reaching out through the 111 service, visiting local walk-in centres, or consulting private paediatric clinics that offer same-day appointments for urgent cases.
Resources for Parents
In her guidance, Lewis highlights the Healthier Together website created by the NHS, which features a traffic light system to assist parents in determining when to take action regarding their child’s health. This resource aims to simplify the decision-making process for families during a time when many children are susceptible to illness.
Ultimately, trusting one’s instincts and understanding a child’s unique health patterns can significantly influence timely medical intervention. As winter viruses sweep through communities, parents are encouraged to stay informed and proactive in safeguarding their children’s health.
