Century-Old Tree Removed to Facilitate Urban Reconstruction

A longstanding tree on Ulica slobode in Podgorica has been removed as part of the foundational reconstruction of the street. Workers cut down the approximately 15-meter-high tree early yesterday morning to proceed with the installation of underground utilities. The Agency for Construction and Development of Podgorica, the project’s investor, indicated that this action was necessary to move forward with the work on the site.
Environmental activists had previously condemned this decision, voicing their concerns about the removal of the tree as an example of negligence rather than a necessity. They argue that cutting down a tree that has stood for decades reflects a broader issue of irresponsibility within society.
According to statements from the Agency for Construction and Development, all vital installations were planned to run through the area where the tree was situated. They noted that the decision followed urban planning and technical conditions outlined in their project. As part of the renovation, a new row of 13 evergreen oak trees is set to be planted along this section of Ulica slobode.
The agency emphasized the precarious position of the tree, stating that the installation work around it had already damaged its roots, which extended into the street. They explained that if the tree had been left standing, it could pose a safety risk due to potential collapse from strong winds, especially with high-voltage power lines and sewage systems planned in close proximity.
Activists have expressed frustration over the removal, arguing that it is a symptom of a broader failure to prioritize sustainable urban development. Vuk Vujisic, a civic activist, had previously urged local authorities not to allow the tree’s removal, proposing instead that it be preserved similarly to an old plane tree on Trg Balsica. He stressed the importance of considering the city’s identity and sustainable growth in urban planning.
Azra Vukovic, Executive Director of the non-governmental organization Green Home, labeled the removal of the tree as a sign of laziness and irresponsibility. She pointed out that the removal of yet another tree that had graced Ulica slobode for over 30 years is part of a troubling pattern in the country. Vukovic remarked that it is often easier to remove trees than to find ways to preserve them.
The reconstruction project on Ulica slobode began on August 25, 2023, with an anticipated completion date of November 30, 2023. The overall cost for the renovation is estimated at approximately €790,000. As work continues, residents and visitors will have to wait for traffic normalization on one of the city’s key thoroughfares.
Vuk Ikovic, an environmental activist from the Preokret movement, expressed disappointment over the tree’s removal, highlighting its historical significance. He noted that the tree had survived World War II and the extensive destruction of Podgorica, only to be cut down in the current urban development effort. Ikovic criticized the leadership’s previous assurances that the tree would be preserved, stating that those promises were short-lived, only lasting while media attention was focused on the issue.
