Montenegrin journalist Marija Radulović has been awarded the second prize at the international Interfer Festival in Belgrade for her impactful report titled “Between Freedom and Civilization.” This year’s competition attracted around 300 entries from regions across Europe and beyond, including countries such as Germany, France, Pakistan, and Australia.

The festival recognized excellence in various categories, including radio and television reporting, print journalism, photography, and socially responsible reporting. Radulović’s compelling narrative centers on her encounter with Sandra Bojanić, a young woman participating in a protest against the ban on logging in her region. In a sea of predominantly older male protesters, Bojanić held a sign and expressed her determination to fight for her right to manage her own forest.

A Journey into the Forest

Radulović approached Bojanić at the protest and learned about her unique life as a truck driver and forest owner. They arranged a visit to Bojanić’s village of Dragalj, where she would showcase her work. The team, which included cameraman Niko Tripunović and driver Dražen Simonović, trekked three kilometers through the woods to meet Bojanić amid her logging activities. Radulović described the experience as rewarding, noting that Bojanić’s candidness and simplicity captivated everyone involved.

Within just 24 hours of its release on social media, the report garnered 2.5 million views. Radulović emphasized that Bojanić’s story reflects her freedom to live life on her own terms, despite societal prejudices. This theme of choice and autonomy fundamentally inspired the report’s title.

Radulović credited her colleague Đorđije Vujičić for his contributions to the editing process, underscoring that the award-winning story was a product of teamwork. Upon learning about her recognition at the festival, Radulović expressed immense pride and gratitude, viewing the award as validation of her commitment to journalism.

The Power of Journalism

During the award ceremony in Belgrade, Radulović participated in a professional symposium discussing “Profit and Profession,” alongside colleagues from Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Switzerland. They examined the paradox of an increasing number of media outlets alongside a declining public trust in journalism. Radulović noted the shared challenges within the industry, including political and economic pressures and the continuous quest for independence and professional standards.

“Despite all obstacles, there are journalists and newsrooms dedicated to the belief that journalism can change society for the better,”

she remarked.

Reflecting on her career, Radulović acknowledged the emotional toll of reporting on difficult stories. She emphasized the importance of maintaining professional distance while covering the often painful realities faced by individuals. Her focus remains on capturing the lives of ordinary people living extraordinary lives. “I find joy in documenting stories that remind us what it means to be human,” she explained.

Radulović believes that journalism possesses the power to inspire change, even in small increments. She cited her experiences during the devastating floods of 2010, where her coverage led to a coordinated rescue operation for stranded wild horses. Such moments reinforce her belief in the role of journalism as a catalyst for societal compassion and action.

As she looks to the future, Radulović encourages young journalists to listen intently to their interview subjects, noting that sometimes silence speaks volumes. Her advice emphasizes the importance of curiosity and empathy in storytelling, as these qualities often resonate with audiences. With a career at TVCG since November 2007, Radulović has evolved from a morning program reporter to a prominent figure behind the scenes of the news. Her accolades include the title of the best young journalist in 2014 and a special award for documentary programming in 2022.

With the support of her family, Radulović balances her demanding career with her personal life, sharing her experiences with her children. In her view, journalism is not just a profession; it is a way of life that requires dedication and emotional investment. She remains committed to ensuring that every story maintains warmth, truth, and depth, reflecting the spirit of the individuals she captures on film.
