Lovćen Handball Team Exits EHF European Cup After Heavy Loss
Montenegro’s handball team, Lovćen, faced a disappointing exit from the EHF European Cup after suffering a significant defeat against Greece’s Drama 1986. Despite a home victory of 32:27 in the first leg, Lovćen couldn’t maintain their momentum and were defeated 31:23 in the return match held on March 15, 2024.
The match in the city of Drama started evenly, with both teams at 10:10 after the first 18 minutes. However, Drama 1986 launched a decisive 4:0 run, taking a commanding lead of 10:6, which they maintained throughout the game. At halftime, the score stood at 12:8, a result that would have advanced Lovćen to the next round if it had held.
In the second half, Drama extended their lead to 17:10 by the 37th minute, leaving Lovćen with no chance for a comeback. The defeat was particularly challenging for the Montenegrin champions, who had only recently secured one win in the Greek league against a lower-ranked team.
Konstantinos Kocionis was instrumental for Drama 1986, scoring an impressive 11 goals during the match. Lovćen’s Milan Popović was the top scorer for his team, contributing six goals to their efforts.
The game took place at the Krahtidis Hall and attracted a crowd of approximately 1,200 spectators. The officiating was handled by referees D. Manea and R. Iliesku from Romania.
The match statistics show that Drama was awarded 1 penalty shot, successfully converting it, while Lovćen scored 2 penalties. The game also saw a total of 10 minutes of exclusions for Lovćen, compared to 8 minutes for Drama.
As Lovćen reflects on their early exit from the European competition, they will need to regroup and focus on their domestic league performance moving forward. This match highlights the challenges faced by teams competing on an international level and the need for consistent performance to advance in prestigious tournaments like the EHF European Cup.
