Understanding Dog Aggression: Insights from a Canine Expert
The discussion surrounding dog aggression has intensified, particularly regarding certain breeds like the XL Bully. While this breed often dominates conversations about canine attacks, experts emphasize that aggression can arise in many dogs based on their upbringing and circumstances. Jeanette Muldoon, a dog behaviourist with the Family Dog Club, provides insights into the complexities of dog behaviour and the factors that can trigger aggressive tendencies.
Muldoon argues that the notion of inherently aggressive breeds is misleading. In a 2024 statement, she expressed, “I don’t believe there is an aggressive dog breed as such… There are some breeds which, if their needs aren’t met, may show aggressive tendencies through frustration.” This perspective shifts the focus from breed-specific traits to the importance of fulfilling a dog’s physical and emotional needs.
Factors Influencing Aggression in Dogs
According to Muldoon, various breeds, especially working breeds such as German Shepherds, Boxers, Rottweilers, and Dobermanns, may exhibit unpredictable behaviour if their requirements are not adequately addressed. Interestingly, even the popular Labrador Retriever, recognized for its friendly demeanor, is classified as a working dog. Despite their sociable nature, Labradors require at least two hours of exercise daily. Insufficient physical activity may lead to frustration, increasing the likelihood of aggressive behaviours like biting and growling.
Muldoon further explains that larger dogs can pose greater risks if they exhibit aggression. She notes that some dogs have been bred with aggression as a goal, but many do not fulfil these expectations, leading to abandonment. This highlights the need for responsible breeding practices and the understanding that behaviour is not solely determined by genetics.
The Role of Trauma and Environment
Aggression in dogs is also closely linked to their past experiences and environments. Muldoon points out that trauma can significantly influence a dog’s behaviour. “If a dog has had a traumatic incident or past, then this can cause them to react in certain situations in an aggressive manner,” she explains. If a dog feels cornered or threatened and cannot escape, it may resort to aggression as a survival tactic.
Recognizing the triggers behind a dog’s behaviour is essential for preventing aggression. Muldoon emphasizes the importance of understanding a dog’s emotional state, which can be affected by various factors such as pain, fear, or fatigue. “If you just look at the symptoms, you won’t get to the cause of the aggression,” she warns.
Strategies for Managing Aggression
While it may not be possible to entirely eliminate aggression, Muldoon suggests several strategies to help dogs feel more secure and reduce aggressive tendencies. Initial management techniques are crucial, combined with an understanding of the dog’s emotional well-being. Owners must consider questions like: Is the dog in pain? What is causing them distress? Are they tired or scared?
Training plays a role in addressing aggression, but Muldoon asserts that it is only a small part of the solution. She advises dog owners experiencing aggressive behaviour to consult a qualified behaviourist for tailored guidance. By focusing on the underlying issues and implementing effective management strategies, owners can create a more harmonious environment for both themselves and their pets.
Understanding the complexities of dog behaviour is vital for fostering safe interactions between dogs and humans. By prioritizing the needs of dogs and addressing their emotional health, owners can significantly reduce the risk of aggression and enhance the well-being of their canine companions.
