Man Found Guilty of Murdering Partner in Shetland Hot Tub Attack

A 41-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering his partner, 24-year-old Claire Leveque, in a brutal attack at a hot tub in Shetland. The incident occurred on February 11, 2024, at a residence in the Sandness area, where Aren Pearson inflicted multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma on Ms Leveque.

During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, evidence revealed that Pearson attacked Ms Leveque with knives or similar instruments, striking her on the head, neck, and body. He also compressed her neck and submerged her head in water, leading to her death shortly after the assault. When authorities arrived, Ms Leveque was discovered in the hot tub with serious injuries.

Following the attack, Pearson left the scene and drove to Melby Pier, where he deliberately drove his vehicle into the sea. He later returned to the property, where police subsequently arrested him.

Detective Inspector Richard Baird, who led the investigation, described the violence inflicted by Pearson as “truly horrifying.” He highlighted that the investigation uncovered evidence of a controlling and abusive relationship, indicating that Pearson had sought to degrade Ms Leveque prior to her death.

Baird stated, “These actions and his actions after his violent attack which led to her death show him as a cruel and selfish individual, and it is right that he will now face the consequences of what he has done. Today’s verdict cannot change what happened, but I hope it brings a degree of closure to Claire’s family.”

Chief Inspector Chris Sewell, the Shetland area commander, remarked that crimes of this nature are “extremely rare” in the region.
