IKEA Chester Opens Today Amid Mixed Reactions from Shoppers

IKEA has officially opened its new store in Chester today, marking the brand’s continued expansion into smaller markets. Located in the Greyhound Retail Park, the store opened its doors at 10:00 am local time. While many shoppers expressed excitement about the new location, others raised concerns regarding its size compared to larger IKEA outlets.

The Chester store has a gross internal area of approximately 30,500 sq ft, significantly smaller than the IKEA store in Warrington, which boasts a sprawling 290,000 sq ft. A shopper noted, “I can’t imagine it being big enough,” highlighting the apprehension some customers feel about the scale of the new establishment.

This launch follows the openings of IKEA Harlow and IKEA Norwich earlier this year, making Chester the third small-format store to debut in 2023. The smaller store format has been developed to allow for a quicker and more cost-effective setup than traditional IKEA locations. These stores are strategically positioned in retail parks, utilizing existing structures to streamline construction, much like the brand’s renowned flatpack furniture.

The opening of IKEA Chester is part of the retailer’s broader strategy to make its products more accessible in suburban areas and smaller cities where IKEA has not previously been present. Customers at the Chester location can expect to find inspiring room sets, a variety of second-hand items, kitchen planning services, and a selection of home furnishings available for immediate purchase.

Andy MacGregor, the Unit Manager for IKEA Chester, expressed enthusiasm about the opening: “We can’t wait to open our new home in Chester. While a small store, customers can still expect the IKEA experience they know and love, including home furnishing inspiration, our signature food, and expert planning services – and, of course, a warm welcome when we open our doors.”

The store will employ a team of around 35 workers, providing local job opportunities. Opening hours are set for Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Sundays from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The community response has been mixed. While one shopper expressed excitement, saying, “Can’t wait for IKEA to open… it’ll do well at the Greyhound park,” others have shared reservations about the store’s limitations. One individual remarked, “IKEA would be fab in the Chester area, but this site is far too small for an IKEA shopping experience or browse.” The closure of the nearby John Lewis store has left some residents hoping for a more expansive shopping option.

As IKEA Chester embarks on this new chapter, it remains to be seen how the store will navigate customer expectations in a smaller format. The balance between accessibility and product variety will be crucial in determining the store’s success in the Chester area.
