Taylor Swift Reveals Why She Won’t Perform at Super Bowl Halftime

Pop star Taylor Swift has clarified her reasons for declining to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, dispelling rumors that her fiancé, Travis Kelce, disapproved of the idea. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 2, 2023, Swift addressed speculation surrounding her decision amid her ongoing promotional tour for her new album, The Life of a Showgirl.
When asked by Fallon about claims that she turned down the opportunity due to restrictions imposed by the NFL regarding performance footage, the 35-year-old singer firmly stated, “No.” She elaborated on her relationship with Jay-Z, founder of Roc Nation, which collaborates with the NFL to select halftime performers. “Jay-Z has always been fair to me,” she said, emphasizing the close relationship between their teams. “They often call and ask, ‘How does she feel about the Super Bowl?’”
Swift made it clear that there has been no official offer or formal discussion regarding her potential performance. Instead, the inquiries from Jay-Z’s team reflect a genuine interest in her feelings about the event. “We can always tell him the truth, which is that I’m in love with a guy who plays that sport, on that same field,” she explained.
In her remarks, Swift described the sport as “violent chess” with players acting as gladiators without weapons, highlighting the intense physical and mental demands placed on athletes. “Can you imagine?” she quipped. “He is out there every Sunday, risking his life in that extremely demanding and stressful sport, while I’m thinking, ‘Hmm, what choreography could I create?’”
Swift’s relationship with Kelce, tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, has intensified public interest in her potential Super Bowl performance since they began dating in 2023. Fans speculated that her surprise appearance on Kelce’s podcast, New Heights, in August hinted at her possible involvement in the halftime show.
Despite the buzz surrounding her personal life and the NFL, Swift reiterated that her focus remains on supporting Kelce during the season. “This has nothing to do with Travis; he would love for me to perform. I’m just too focused,” she stated.
In a recent announcement, it was confirmed that Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny will headline the Super Bowl halftime show in 2026. As anticipation builds for future performances, Swift’s candid comments shed light on her priorities and the pressures faced by artists in high-stakes events like the Super Bowl.
Swift’s clarity on the matter not only addresses fan curiosity but also reinforces her dedication to both her career and her personal life. As her relationship with Kelce continues to unfold, fans remain hopeful for a future performance that aligns with her artistic vision and priorities.
