Manchester United is facing a challenging situation as they prepare to host Sunderland at Old Trafford on March 16, 2024. Up to six players could potentially miss the match, adding pressure on United to secure a much-needed victory following their recent 3-1 defeat to Brentford. Sunderland, in contrast, arrives with momentum, having secured a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest, placing them fifth in the Premier League table.

Currently, Manchester United finds itself precariously close to the relegation zone, just three points away. In contrast, Sunderland is vying for a position in the top four, separated only by goal difference from Tottenham Hotspur. Despite Sunderland’s strong position, they have not triumphed at Old Trafford since May 2014, when a solitary goal from Sebastian Larsson secured a 1-0 victory.

Injuries and Player Availability

Sunderland has received a boost ahead of the fixture, as manager Regis Le Bris confirmed that defender Nordi Mukiele is fit and available for selection. “Nordi is fine, he’s OK. We have no new injuries,” Le Bris stated during a press conference. He also provided updates on other players: “With Romaine Mundle and Dennis Cirkin, there is no definite date for their return to play. We think it will probably be a month, maybe a month and a half.”

Le Bris noted similar timelines for Leo Hjelde and Aji Alese, indicating that both players are also recovering from injuries. “Leo is back running, with Aji there was a very small injury so he took a little step back. Probably one month for each,” he added.

The Sunderland manager acknowledged the challenges of facing Manchester United. “Being at Old Trafford demands strong personality and strong character,” he remarked. “I still believe that we’ll need to upgrade our performance to be competitive in Manchester. They are strong, create many chances from everywhere, and have talented players.”

Manchester United’s Injury Concerns

On the other side, United will be without Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez due to injuries. Ruben Amorim, United’s coach, stated that Mazraoui would be sidelined until the international break, while Martinez, who has been recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in February, is expected to return later in the year.

Despite these setbacks, United will welcome back Casemiro, who missed the previous match due to suspension, and Amad, who has returned from compassionate leave following a family bereavement. In addition, Daniel Armer could be included in the squad after participating in first team training on Wednesday.

With both teams aiming to improve their standings in the league, the match promises to be a pivotal encounter for Manchester United and Sunderland alike. The stakes are high, and fans will be hoping for an entertaining clash at one of football’s most iconic venues.
