Funding Boost for Shetland Museum Project and Upcoming Jazz Concert

Funding of nearly £30,000 has been secured for an exhibition at the Shetland Museum that will highlight the work of four artists who have faced systemic exclusion. The project, titled Centring the Heritage and Experience of Creatives of Colour, is led by the Scottish organization Zya Community. This initiative will explore themes related to systemic exclusion and the lived experiences of Shetland community members, particularly those dealing with geographical isolation and the need for collective resilience.
The funding, amounting to £28,333, was granted by Museums Galleries Scotland. Nikki Kilburn, Director of Zya Community, stated, “Partnering with Shetland Museum and Archives through Delivering Change is a unique opportunity to reimagine how collections can inspire. This funding enables us to support artists to lead that process, ensuring creativity and community voices are at the heart of systemic change.”
Jazz Concert Highlights Shetland’s Cultural Scene
In a celebration of creativity, award-winning tenor saxophonist Harben Kay will host a workshop on improvisation at Mareel on October 7, 2023, followed by a performance the next evening. This event marks the launch of Kay’s third album, The World I Live In, which has been described as a powerful reflection on change and creativity during transformative times. Shetland Arts noted that Kay, whose father hails from Lerwick, is rapidly gaining recognition as a leading voice in UK jazz.
Tickets for the workshop and concert are available for purchase online or directly from Mareel.
Shetland’s Unique Offerings and Weather Alerts
Additionally, Skibhoul Bakery in Unst has been featured in a new guide from VisitScotland, highlighting the best “oat-based experiences” across the country. While the guide focuses primarily on porridge, Skibhoul’s renowned oatcakes earned it a spot due to their unique appeal. The guide’s release coincides with the debut of The Golden Spurtle, a documentary celebrating the annual World Porridge Making Championship held in Carrbridge.
The Met Office has also issued a weather warning for wind in Shetland, effective from 18:00 on October 6, 2023, lasting until late night on October 7, 2023.
In transport news, Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) is encouraging passengers using its 11 airports to participate in an online survey. Respondents will have the chance to enter a draw for Loganair flights. HIAL aims to gather insights into passenger experiences to identify areas for improvement in services and facilities.
These initiatives represent a vibrant blend of cultural, artistic, and community-focused developments in Shetland, underscoring the region’s commitment to fostering creativity and resilience among its residents.
