Meet Wendy Fay: A Military Veteran’s Journey to Community Service

Wendy Fay, a familiar face at the Great Barrington Price Chopper in Massachusetts, has a story that intertwines military service with community dedication. Since moving to Berkshire County in 2002, Fay has become known for her approachable demeanor, often assisting customers with a smile, even in challenging situations. Her journey is marked not only by her time in the military but also by her commitment to family and her local community.
From Connecticut to the Navy
Born in Milford, Connecticut, in 1960, Fay moved to Cheshire at the age of 11. She graduated from Cheshire High School in 1978 and initially pursued a degree in forestry at Albright College. However, after only a brief stint in college, she made a significant life decision to join the United States Navy at the age of 24.
Fay chose the Navy for its vast opportunities, especially the chance to travel. In the 1980s, she was stationed in Hawaii, where she trained as a Seabee, a specialized construction unit. “I became a Seabee doing construction work,” she explained during an interview. Her time in Hawaii was not only professionally rewarding but also personally significant, as it was there she met her future husband, Brian Wegner.
Life in the Military and Beyond
Fay’s military career took her to various locations, including a notable deployment to Souda Bay in Crete, Greece, where she served for 15 months. Reflecting on her experience, she noted, “You meet different people from all over.” This exposure to diverse cultures enriched her perspective, reinforcing the value of understanding and living in different environments.
After her military service, Fay returned to Connecticut, where she and her husband purchased a fixer-upper home in Cheshire. Their journey into homeownership began with a purchase price of $132,000 for an 850-square-foot property. Over the years, they gradually renovated the house, an experience Fay describes as enjoyable and fulfilling.
In 2000, the couple relocated to Otis, Massachusetts, to be closer to Fay’s aging parents. This move came after the tragic loss of her brother shortly after the events of September 11, 2001. “I was the oldest,” Fay remarked, highlighting her sense of responsibility towards her family.
Now a staple at Price Chopper, Fay takes pride in her work, which allows her to connect with a wide array of customers. She appreciates the diversity of the community that comes through the store, noting how it has changed over the years. “In the beginning, there weren’t as many people from farther away. Bit by bit, there were more people from all over the states,” she said.
Fay’s ability to remain calm and collected, even in stressful situations, is one of her defining traits. “Sometimes you have to step back, because some people, no matter what you do, they’re not going to be happy,” she acknowledged. This perspective has contributed to her positive approach to customer service.
Outside of work, Fay enjoys walking, gardening, and riding motorcycles with her husband. She cherishes the natural beauty of the Berkshires and often explores the area’s scenic routes. “That’s what I enjoy the most after a bad day,” she said, emphasizing the importance of finding solace in nature.
As she navigates her responsibilities at Price Chopper and her personal life, Wendy Fay embodies the spirit of dedication and resilience, making her not just a valued employee but also a beloved member of the Otis community. Her journey from a military career to community service reflects a commitment to making a positive impact wherever she goes.
