The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and Queen’s University have launched a new initiative aimed at preventing drink spiking in bars and clubs across Belfast. The program, known as the Drink Check initiative, was unveiled during Freshers’ Week as a response to safety concerns raised by students.

This initiative involves the distribution of specialized drink spiking test kits to 33 popular venues in Belfast. These kits are designed to provide reassurance to patrons and deter potential spikers. The Queen’s Neighbourhood Engagement team played a crucial role in spearheading this project, which aims to enhance safety in nightlife settings.

Each participating venue will prominently display posters indicating that drink testing is available on-site. Staff at these locations have been supplied with drink testing strips that can be used to check for tampering. If a customer suspects their drink has been spiked, they can present it at the bar for testing. Should the test indicate a potential spiking incident, the PSNI will be notified to initiate an investigation. Additionally, the venue’s CCTV footage will be reviewed to help identify any individuals involved.

The initiative also includes the provision of ‘Ask for Angela’ materials at all participating venues. This program offers a discreet way for patrons to seek help from bar staff using a code word if they feel unsafe or vulnerable.

By implementing this proactive measure, both the PSNI and Queen’s University aim to create a safer environment for students and other patrons enjoying Belfast’s vibrant nightlife. The collaboration reflects a growing concern over safety in social settings, particularly among younger individuals who may be more vulnerable to such incidents.

As the initiative unfolds, it will not only provide immediate support to those at risk but also raise awareness around the issue of drink spiking, encouraging both patrons and staff to be vigilant.
