Air Peace CEO Highlights Government Support for Nigerian Airlines

The Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has stated that the Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has empowered local airlines to compete on international routes. Onyema made these remarks during the annual induction ceremony of the Nigeria British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) on March 15, 2024, where he addressed misconceptions surrounding Air Peace’s operations, particularly its entry into the London market.
During his keynote speech, Onyema emphasized the government’s role in supporting Nigerian airlines. He expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the Tinubu administration, stating, “This federal government has made it easy for Nigerian airlines to challenge the status quo.” His comments followed a series of media reports that he claimed misrepresented the circumstances surrounding Air Peace’s access to London.
Onyema clarified that recent articles incorrectly suggested that the British government had prevented Air Peace from establishing flights to London for several years. He stated, “I never said that,” referring to a misquote published in a Nigerian newspaper. Instead, he noted the positive collaboration with the British Deputy High Commissioner, John Baxter, which facilitated Air Peace’s operations. “He has made it possible for our operations to move very seamlessly,” Onyema said.
Amid these clarifications, Onyema highlighted the importance of accurate reporting, asserting that the portrayal of government involvement often downplays the Nigerian administration’s contributions. He remarked, “The Nigeria government at a time threatened that if Air Peace was not given the right to go to London, that something would happen in return.”
One of the key points of Onyema’s address was the impact of Air Peace’s entry into the international market. He noted that the increased competition has led to lower airfares, benefiting passengers. “I am sure that the majority of Nigerians are happy that the entry of Air Peace into the international route has crashed airfares,” he stated. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that there are dissenting voices who may resist these changes.
Onyema also addressed the need for improved aviation etiquette among Nigerian passengers. He cited a recent incident involving a renowned musician, KWAM 1, who disrupted a flight in Abuja. He expressed concern over the potential dangers of such actions, stating, “It is only God that saved this country on that day.”
His comments extended to the responsibilities of airlines during unforeseen circumstances, such as weather-related delays. Onyema clarified, “It is not the duty of the airline to fix you. It is your duty,” emphasizing that passengers often misinterpret the airlines’ role during such situations. He explained that airlines operate on fixed schedules and that disrupting these can lead to a cascade of operational challenges.
The President of the NBCC, Mr. Abimbola Olashore, welcomed new members during the ceremony, highlighting the chamber’s commitment to fostering connections between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He remarked, “It is a defining moment where we pause to reflect on the legacy of our chamber while also embracing the future with renewed energy.”
As Air Peace continues to expand its international operations, Onyema’s voice remains influential in shaping the narrative around Nigerian aviation. His advocacy for accurate reporting and his commitment to improving passenger experiences reflect the evolving landscape of air travel in Nigeria. The ongoing support from the government and the collaboration with international partners will be crucial as the airline seeks to enhance its global presence.
