Brora Rangers Triumph Over Buckie Thistle Despite Red Card Drama
Ten-man Brora Rangers secured a decisive 4-1 victory against Buckie Thistle at Dudgeon Park, propelling them to second place in the Breedon Highland League. The match featured a remarkable performance from Shane Sutherland, who scored a hat-trick, despite Brora losing Max Ewan to a red card midway through the first half.
The game began with both teams displaying intense energy, but Brora struck first in the 20th minute. After a defensive error from Buckie’s Darryl McHardy, Sutherland capitalized on a loose ball, setting the stage for an impactful performance. Ewan’s dismissal came just three minutes later as he contested a 50-50 ball, leading to the referee, Ewan Pow, issuing a straight red card.
Despite being a man down, Brora maintained their momentum. Sutherland doubled the lead after a defensive misstep from Buckie, heading in from a corner in the 33rd minute. His hat-trick was completed just before half-time when he maneuvered through Buckie’s defense and found the bottom corner, leaving the score at 3-0 by the interval.
Buckie Thistle entered the second half determined to turn the tide, and they found the net early on in the 51st minute. Josh Peters managed to score from the edge of the box, giving Buckie a glimmer of hope. However, their efforts to mount a comeback faltered as Brora’s defense held strong.
Brora added a fourth goal in the 89th minute when substitutes connected effectively, with Aidan Wilson scoring after a swift counter-attack. The match concluded with a second yellow card for Peters, further complicating Buckie’s evening.
In other matches, Huntly made a successful start under new manager Graeme Stewart with a 2-0 win over Deveronvale. Goals from Michael Clark and Callum Murray secured the win at Christie Park.
At Mosset Park, Forres Mechanics and Banks o’ Dee settled for a 1-1 draw. Liam Duell opened the scoring for Banks o’ Dee, but Ben Gardiner equalized for Forres after the break. Duell received a late red card, but the match ended level.
In the Highland League Cup, Brechin City edged past Nairn County with a 3-2 victory, advancing to the semi-finals. The match, held at Cove’s Balmoral Stadium, saw Nairn take an early lead before Brechin rallied to secure the win with a late goal from Mitchell Findlay.
The results not only highlight the competitive nature of the Highland League but also set the stage for further exciting matches in the coming weeks.
