Messi Leads Inter Miami to Friendly Victory Over Independiente
Inter Miami concluded their preseason friendly tour with a 2-1 victory over Independiente del Valle on February 26, 2024, in Puerto Rico. The match, originally scheduled for February 13, had to be postponed due to a hamstring injury sustained by star player Lionel Messi during a previous match. Despite starting their MLS season with a disappointing 3-0 loss to LAFC just days earlier, Inter Miami demonstrated their commitment to the friendly by rescheduling and honoring the event.
In a video message prior to the rescheduled match, Messi expressed his disappointment over the initial postponement. He explained, “To be honest, during the last game in Ecuador, I concluded with a muscle strain, which is why I left the field early. Together with the organization and Inter Miami, it was decided to suspend this game. We hope it can be reprogrammed.” His sentiments reflected the team’s desire to connect with their fans in Puerto Rico, acknowledging the support they had received.
Inter Miami, in collaboration with local event promoters and the Puerto Rican government, successfully rescheduled the friendly to accommodate both the team and the fans. Coach Javier Mascherano utilized the match to provide playing time to squad members who had limited opportunities in the preseason and the recent league opener. He stated, “This game clearly gives us the opportunity to give minutes to guys who have perhaps had fewer minutes in the preseason and in the last game we played.”
The match featured a blend of players, with Mascherano starting several who had not participated significantly against LAFC. Notable players included Rodrigo de Paul and several others who were looking to gain match fitness. Messi made his entrance in the second half, injecting energy into the game.
Messi showcased his skills by scoring from the penalty spot, receiving loud ovations from the crowd every time he touched the ball. The atmosphere intensified as fans expressed their excitement, with some even rushing onto the field to get a selfie with the World Cup winner.
The game served as a vital opportunity for Inter Miami to regroup following their season opener. The team’s ability to bounce back and secure a win not only boosted morale but also reinforced their dedication to their supporters. As the MLS season progresses, the players will aim to build on this momentum, hoping for more successes in upcoming matches.
