Belfast City Council has announced a budget of £300,000 for its St Patrick’s Day celebrations, set to take place on March 17, 2025. The council shared details of the plans in a document submitted to its January City Growth and Regeneration Committee, outlining various initiatives and partnerships aimed at creating a festive atmosphere throughout the city.

The budget remains consistent with last year’s allocation, reflecting the council’s commitment to maintaining a vibrant celebration. Key partners in this year’s festivities will include Luxe, Circusful, Beam Creative, Tradfest, and Féile an Phobail. The events will kick off with the St Patrick’s Music Festival, running from March 13 to 17, as part of Belfast’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music.

Exciting Events and Activities Planned

A variety of activities are scheduled in the lead-up to St Patrick’s Day, showcasing the city’s rich cultural heritage. The TradTrail, organized by Féile an Phobail, will feature performances by local and national traditional musicians. This initiative will provide free music in bars, restaurants, hotels, and visitor attractions across Belfast starting early in March.

According to the council’s document, the celebration aims to present “a diverse, cross-cultural and cross-traditions celebration in honour of St Patrick.” Events will include headline concerts, workshops, set and céilí dancing, and reflective pilgrimages. A free St Patrick’s Day Festival Village will also be set up in the Cathedral Quarter, inviting everyone to partake in the festivities.

On March 15, the Pipe Band Extravaganza will take place at City Hall from 12:00 to 14:00. The event features a remarkable lineup, including the iconic Dougie MacLean, known for his famous anthem “Caledonia,” and local harper Ursula Burns. Other notable performers set to appear include Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, the 2022 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Singer of the Year, alongside celebrated musicians such as Andy Irvine from Planxty and Mick O’Brien, a prominent uilleann piper.

Inclusivity and Cultural Participation

The St Patrick’s Day Parade will occur on March 17, 2025, commencing from Belfast City Hall. This family-friendly event is designed to celebrate cultural diversity and inclusivity, with participation from various community and professional organizations. The parade aims to showcase a procession of floats that represent the city’s rich tapestry of backgrounds.

Additionally, Seachtain na Gaeilge, the world’s largest Irish language festival, will be hosted in Belfast by Conradh na Gaeilge, running from March 1 to 17. The council’s goal is to enhance participation through accessible, community-centered events that raise awareness of the Irish language. A key feature will be the Irish Cultural and Family Celebration Day, titled Spraoi Cois Lao or “Footprint Fun,” scheduled for March 7 at Custom House Square from 13:00 to 16:00.

These initiatives highlight Belfast’s commitment to celebrating its cultural heritage while encouraging community involvement. The city aims to create an engaging atmosphere for both locals and visitors, ensuring a memorable St Patrick’s Day experience for all.
