The ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, has significantly increased viewership for the morning program. As of February 2, 2024, Savannah has been absent from the show while her family deals with the aftermath of her mother’s kidnapping. Nancy, aged 84, was last seen on January 31, 2024, prompting extensive media coverage and public interest in the case.

Viewership Increases Amid Investigation

According to a report from Variety based on data from Nielsen, the Today Show experienced a surge in viewership of 23%, translating to an increase of approximately 624,000 viewers compared to the same period last year. This rise comes as the program provides daily updates on the investigation into Nancy’s kidnapping, drawing in viewers eager for the latest developments.

During the five days ending February 6, 2024, the Today Show averaged nearly 3.32 million viewers, outpacing its competitors, ABC’s Good Morning America with approximately 2.91 million and CBS Mornings at around 1.84 million viewers. Notably, Today commands 41% of the morning show audience, compared to GMA’s 36% and CBS Mornings’ 23%.

As the investigation continues, NBC has benefitted from additional viewership driven by the live broadcast of the 2026 Winter Olympics from Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The Olympics coverage has further contributed to the program’s elevated ratings.

Investigation Updates and Family Impact

Despite the increased viewership, the search for Nancy remains challenging. The investigation has now entered its 12th day, with some recent developments including the release of photos and video footage of a suspect approaching her residence. As of now, the identity of the alleged kidnapper has not been confirmed, and Nancy remains missing.

On Tuesday evening, authorities detained a food delivery driver for questioning but later released him. Reports indicate activity in a Bitcoin account linked to the alleged kidnapper and a ransom note, raising concerns about the potential for financial demands in the ongoing case.

Initially expected to co-host the Winter Olympics coverage, Savannah has been replaced by former tennis player and NBC Sports commentator Mary Carillo, who will join Mike Tirico for the event’s broadcasts. The current co-anchors for the Today Show are Craig Melvin and Hoda Kotb, with Savannah’s absence felt deeply by both the team and viewers alike.

The Today Show continues to provide updates on the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping. For the latest information and developments, viewers are encouraged to stay tuned to the program as the story unfolds.
