Podgorica’s Mayor Warns of Potential Forced Administration
Saša Mujović, the Mayor of Podgorica, has indicated that the introduction of forced administration is a viable scenario if the city’s assembly fails to achieve quorum. This warning comes amid ongoing political instability in Montenegro’s capital, where the mayor has reaffirmed his commitment to leading the city while adhering to legal protocols.
Political Landscape and Implications
In a recent interview with the television program “24 sata,” Mujović emphasized that he will continue to fulfill his duties as mayor as long as the law permits. He stated, “The administration of the Capital City will operate in a completely usual and normal manner as long as I am mayor. There is no room for pessimism; we are moving towards new working victories.”
Mujović expressed concerns that if the assembly does not convene, the prospect of forced administration becomes increasingly likely. He noted that new elections would be the most appropriate solution, although the next elections are scheduled for 2027, making it impractical to conduct two electoral processes in quick succession. He stated, “In that situation, forced administration is the best solution.”
Recent developments have seen members of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) exit the ruling coalition, bolstering the opposition. Mujović acknowledged that this shift has resulted in the opposition gaining “more votes,” allowing them to potentially initiate a motion for his dismissal.
Despite the challenges, Mujović remains calm and focused on ongoing projects, particularly one in Botun that he considers one of the most significant in the region. He believes that Montenegro will not be the same after the project’s completion, both from a health and environmental standpoint.
Future Prospects and Governance
Mujović is optimistic about the future of Podgorica and insists that the city will progress irrespective of political hurdles. He stated, “It is unacceptable for one politician or political force to prevent this city from moving forward.” He also highlighted the necessity for a session of the city assembly by the end of March to assess the political dynamics and determine if a quorum can be reached.
In response to calls for his resignation from DNP leader Milan Knežević, Mujović reacted with sarcasm, suggesting that perhaps he should consult with Knežević on when to step down. He stressed that the current assembly lacks sufficient numbers to form a majority, with four fewer councilors than required. Nevertheless, he affirmed, “I will perform my duties diligently until someone replaces me.”
When asked about the fate of DNP members in key positions within municipal enterprises, Mujović remarked that it would be appropriate for them to resign if they support their leader’s controversial statements regarding him. He emphasized the importance of integrity and principled behavior in governance.
Looking ahead, Mujović anticipates the resumption of work at the wastewater treatment plant in Botun next week after minor administrative issues are resolved. He reassured citizens that these challenges are minor and will not impede the project’s progress.
Mujović reiterated that the Botun facility is crucial for improving the quality of life in the entire Zeta region and Montenegro. He urged residents to remain vigilant against misinformation and pressure from those who claim to represent their interests.
As Podgorica navigates this political landscape, Mujović’s leadership will be pivotal in determining the city’s direction amid looming uncertainties.
