Political Dynamics Shift in Montenegro: DNP Leads NSD in Polls

Results from a recent opinion poll indicate a shift in political dynamics within Montenegro, particularly concerning the coalition “For the Future of Montenegro” (ZBCG). According to political analyst Miloš Bešić, who presented the findings on TVCG, the survey revealed that the Democratic People’s Party (DNP), led by Aleksandar Knežević, has garnered support from 36.9% of respondents, while the New Serbian Democracy (NSD), headed by Milan Mandić, stands at 26.9%.

Bešić highlighted that a total of 20.1% of citizens expressed support for the ZBCG coalition. He pointed out that 32.7% of participants believe the coalition should remain united. The analysis suggests that a potential split could be detrimental for both parties, especially as the DNP currently enjoys a higher approval rating than the NSD.

“The initial findings indicate that any separation would harm both parties,” Bešić stated during the broadcast. He emphasized that Knežević’ strategy is evidently resonating with his voter base, demonstrating effective engagement.

Addressing the tensions within the coalition, Bešić remarked that while the DNP might not seek to exit the government, threats could be a tactical maneuver. He drew an analogy to chess, suggesting that sometimes a threat can be more effective than a direct action. “I don’t see how the government could meet their demands,” he noted, highlighting the complexity of the political landscape.

The analyst also mentioned that if the government were to abandon plans for the sewage collector in Botun, it would signify a significant defeat for Prime Minister Dritan Abazović and his administration. “The message would be clear: the Prime Minister and the government would lose a critical battle against Knežević,” Bešić explained.

Additionally, he observed that Knežević has seen a rise in his poll numbers, indicating that he is achieving his objectives. “As a member of the government, he can leverage his position without threatening key ministries, which allows him to negotiate effectively,” he said, framing this as a considerable setback for the government.

Bešić also commented on the evolving relationship between Mandić and Knežević, suggesting that Mandić is beginning to recognize the urgency of the situation. “Mandić sees that the situation is serious and that action is required,” he concluded.

The implications of these findings may influence future political decisions as Montenegro approaches crucial legislative sessions. The evolving dynamics within the ZBCG coalition and the broader political landscape will be critical to monitor in the coming weeks.
