Žan Dapčević Bridges Cultures Through Education and Diaspora
Žan Dapčević, an influential figure in the field of education, emphasizes the power of knowledge as a bridge between diaspora communities and their homelands. Born and raised in Slovenia, Dapčević views his connection to Montenegro not merely as a geographical point but as a vital link shaped by his grandfather’s stories. These narratives instilled in him a deep sense of identity and responsibility towards his heritage, regardless of where he resides.
Dapčević’s life journey spans multiple countries, including New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Each experience has contributed to his strategic and global thinking, ultimately leading to his recognition on the Forbes Under 30 Europe list. This accolade reflects his belief that knowledge, vision, and social responsibility can produce tangible impacts on communities.
As the director of Academia – College of Short-Cycle Higher Education, Dapčević measures success not through accolades but by the outcomes of his students and the long-term societal effects of education. For him, the diaspora represents an opportunity for action rather than distance; it embodies potential that, when nurtured systematically, can connect global knowledge with the development of local communities.
Embracing Identity and Heritage
In a recent interview with CGDIJASPORA, Dapčević discussed the significance of his familial ties to Montenegro. He articulated that this connection transcends mere origins, serving as a cornerstone of his identity. “Through my grandfather, I grew up hearing stories about Montenegro, about the people, character, and values that are passed down through generations,” he shared. Today, he perceives this bond as a mature link between cultures and experiences, rather than a relic of the past.
Dapčević continues to visit Montenegro, where he finds comfort in the people and lifestyle, appreciating the immediacy and strong sense of community. He conveyed that the unique energy of the region, where nature, history, and modernity intertwine, resonates deeply with him.
Reflecting on the cultural influences he carries, he noted a blend of pride and perseverance intrinsic to the Montenegrin mindset. “There is a strong sense of dignity and a willingness to endure even when circumstances are tough,” he remarked. These values have informed his approach to education and entrepreneurship.
Transforming Diaspora Connections into Impact
Dapčević defines the concept of diaspora as an expansion of influence rather than a mere departure from one’s homeland. He believes that individuals living abroad often possess valuable knowledge and connections that can significantly benefit their native communities. “If these connections are nurtured systematically, the contributions of the diaspora can be long-lasting and transformative,” he explained.
His educational journey took him from Slovenia to various countries, each shaping his perspective in unique ways. New Zealand provided him with independence and breadth, Singapore instilled discipline and speed, while the United Kingdom, particularly Oxford, honed his strategic thinking and global outlook. “It is difficult to single out one location, as the combination of experiences has been crucial,” he noted.
Dapčević’s engagement with education began at an early age, as he spent considerable time at Academia, which his mother founded in the early 1990s. His involvement allowed him to witness the multiplicative effect of education firsthand. “When you invest in one person’s knowledge, you influence dozens or even hundreds through their work,” he said, emphasizing how this long-term societal impact drives his commitment.
His recognition on the Forbes Under 30 Europe list served as a validation of his direction, though he views it as a responsibility rather than an endpoint. “This acknowledgment is more of an obligation than a reward – it reminds me that my duty to the community and students has grown,” he stated.
As the director of Academia, he has sought to create an institution that is highly international and closely connected to the real sector. Academia stands out due to its practical orientation, industry-experienced instructors, shorter programs, and ongoing adaptation to labor market needs, contrasting sharply with traditional, often sluggish educational systems.
Dapčević advocates for short-cycle, practical programs to help young people enter the workforce swiftly. “The labor market is evolving faster than ever. Young people cannot wait four or five years to gain applicable knowledge. Short-cycle programs facilitate faster specialization and greater adaptability,” he explained.
Collaboration with over 200 domestic and international companies and 100 industry instructors is vital for enhancing the quality of education and the employability of students. Dapčević emphasized that without real-world environments, education remains theoretical. This collaboration allows students to work on real projects, build connections, and develop competencies recognized in the job market.
In late January 2024, Academia will host an online informational presentation aimed at prospective students from the Western Balkans. This event will provide clear insights into programs, admission requirements, costs, diploma recognition, and realistic career opportunities after graduation.
Dapčević highlighted the importance of the online format, particularly for youth in the region. “It eliminates barriers – geographical, financial, and psychological. It enables young people to receive direct information, ask questions, and make informed decisions without unnecessary stress,” he stated.
Additionally, Academia has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Montenegrin Cultural Society “Komovi” in Maribor. Dapčević views such partnerships as crucial for building trust and providing accurate information about studying and living abroad, ultimately facilitating access to quality education that benefits both individuals and society as a whole.
Through his journey, Žan Dapčević exemplifies how education can serve as a bridge, connecting cultures and enhancing communities, ensuring that the rich heritage of Montenegro continues to thrive on a global scale.
