Victoria Beckham’s Documentary Launch: A Fashion Journalist’s Encounter

A recent launch event for a new Netflix documentary on Victoria Beckham has sparked conversation due to a fashion journalist’s unusual experience with the star. The documentary, which chronicles Beckham’s evolution from a pop sensation in the mid-1990s to a prominent fashion figure, premiered on October 9, 2023.
Liz Jones, a noted fashion journalist, shared her account of attending the launch of a Marc Jacobs collection that featured a well-known image of Beckham. Upon her arrival at the venue, Jones claims she received peculiar instructions from Beckham’s public relations team. A representative reportedly informed her that she could not approach Beckham and must “not look at her.” This strict directive left Jones bewildered, prompting her to ask if she was prohibited from making eye contact. The response was clear: “Do not even glance in her direction.”
Jones has had a complex history with the Victoria Beckham brand. Notably, she once secured Beckham as the cover star for an issue of Marie Claire while editing the magazine. Although the cover photos were successful, a candid shot of Beckham with her newborn, Brooklyn Beckham, led to tension. Jones recounted that Beckham disapproved of a proposed headline for the interview, which read “When Posh Came to Shove.” Beckham threatened legal action if the photo of her with Brooklyn was published. To mitigate the situation, Jones sent the best photographs of Beckham and her son to the Beckham household, accompanied by a message assuring that the negatives would be destroyed.
Despite her efforts, Jones felt unappreciated, noting that Beckham did not attend the party celebrating the cover, which also aimed to raise funds for breast cancer research.
Jones’s outspoken nature has led her to clash with various members of the fashion elite. She has previously exposed the practice of gifting within the luxury sector, describing it as akin to bribery. In her view, the culture surrounding complimentary gifts is pervasive, stating that if journalists in other fields accepted money from influential figures, it would be scandalous.
The fashion world, according to Jones, is characterized by “an endless merry-go-round of air kissing and bony-a*** licking.” She suggested that the favorable comments made by designer Tom Ford regarding Beckham’s designs in the documentary are influenced by Beckham’s commitment to wear his designs for the cover of the upcoming October issue of US Elle.
In contrast to Jones’s critiques, Phillip Schofield, co-host of This Morning, defended colleague Holly Willoughby against Jones’s characterizations, stating, “I swear there can be no greater force against all womankind than Liz Jones. She is inconsistent, bitter, nasty and unhinged.”
WalesOnline reached out to Beckham’s representatives for comment, but they declined to provide a statement regarding Jones’s claims. As the much-anticipated documentary, ‘Victoria Beckham,’ begins streaming, it will undoubtedly continue to generate discussion about Beckham’s multifaceted career and her relationships within the fashion industry.
