Father’s Actions Lead to Tragedy as Family Perishes in Fire

A devastating incident unfolded on February 19, 2020, when Rowan Baxter, a former New Zealand rugby player, fatally set fire to his family in a shocking act of violence. His estranged wife, Hannah Baxter, and their three children—Aaliyah, six; Laianah, four; and Trey, three—lost their lives in the tragic event that has left the community in mourning.
Rowan, 44, had a troubling history of abusive behavior towards Hannah, 31, during their eleven-year marriage. Friends of Hannah revealed that he exerted control over her life in various ways, including isolating her from family and dictating her clothing choices. His treatment escalated over the years, resulting in both physical and emotional abuse.
The turning point came when their daughter Aaliyah bravely confronted Rowan, asking to call her mother while he picked her up from school. This incident prompted Hannah to seek safety for herself and her children. After moving in with her parents, she secured a restraining order against Rowan, fearing for their safety. Inquests into the incident revealed her anxiety about Rowan potentially taking the children.
On that fateful day, Hannah was preparing to leave with her children when Rowan unexpectedly entered the vehicle, armed with a petrol canister. As he doused her with petrol, she screamed for help. Managing to steer the car towards a neighbor, she implored, “Call the police, he’s going to kill me.”
Tragically, within moments, the car was engulfed in flames. Neighbors attempted to rescue Hannah and the children, but the fire spread rapidly. Despite suffering severe burns, Hannah managed to escape the vehicle. Unfortunately, her children were trapped inside. The flames proved too intense, and despite her desperate pleas, no one could reach them in time.
Rowan, after escaping the fire, took a knife and inflicted injuries upon himself at the scene. Hannah remained conscious long enough to express her heartbreak, stating, “I hope he survives and rots in jail for the rest of his life,” as she was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Tragically, Hannah succumbed to her injuries later that day, at 17:30.
In the aftermath of the fire, the inquest confirmed the tragic loss of Aaliyah, Laianah, and Trey, whose bodies were found in the back seat of the vehicle. The investigation revealed that the children had suffered injuries incompatible with life and were so badly burned that they could not be visually identified.
This incident has ignited discussions on domestic violence, the complexities of abusive relationships, and the urgent need for effective protective measures for victims and their children. The community grapples with the profound impact of this tragedy, mourning not just the loss of innocent lives but also the heartbreaking circumstances that led to such a devastating outcome.
