Trump Threatens Tariffs on Countries Opposing Greenland Control
President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on countries that do not support the United States’ efforts to take control of Greenland. During a health roundtable discussion at the White House, Trump emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for national security, stating, “I could impose tariffs on countries if they do not align with us regarding Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security.”
In a lengthy post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed concerns about the involvement of several nations, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, in activities related to Greenland. He described the situation as dangerous for the security and survival of the planet, urging these countries to reconsider their actions.
Trump asserted that the United States has subsidized Denmark and other European Union nations by not charging tariffs or other fees for years. “Now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to reciprocate—global peace is at stake!” he stated, referencing the interests of China and Russia in Greenland. He criticized Denmark’s current defense strategy, which he claimed relies on insufficient resources.
Starting February 1, 2026, a 10 percent tariff will be imposed on all goods sent from the aforementioned countries to the United States. This tariff will increase to 25 percent on June 1, 2026. Trump indicated that these tariffs will remain in place until a comprehensive agreement is reached regarding the purchase of Greenland. He highlighted that the U.S. has been attempting to acquire Greenland for over 150 years, with various presidents pursuing the idea without success due to Denmark’s consistent rejection.
Trump stressed the urgency of the situation, citing advancements in military technology and the need for enhanced security measures. “The acquisition of Greenland is particularly important now due to modern weapon systems, both offensive and defensive,” he stated. He noted that the U.S. is currently investing hundreds of billions of dollars in security programs related to missile defense systems and emphasized that effective operations depend on integrating Greenland into these defense strategies.
The U.S. remains open to negotiations with Denmark and any of the nations involved in what Trump described as a concerning situation. “Thank you for your attention to this issue,” he concluded, reinforcing the seriousness of his administration’s stance on Greenland and its implications for global security.
