DNP Leader Urges Respect for Citizens’ Voices in Zeta Conflict
Milan Knežević, leader of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP), has called for the government to respect the voices of Zeta’s residents in light of ongoing tensions surrounding a proposed wastewater treatment plant in Botun. He emphasized that the outcome of a referendum in Zeta would reflect the community’s stance on the matter, which he expects the government to acknowledge. Knežević described any failure to do so as a repressive action against approximately 16,000 citizens, potentially leading to severe consequences.
Knežević criticized elements within the executive branch of the capital and the government for framing the conflict as a political issue rather than a matter affecting the lives of citizens. He stated that a genuine dialogue is essential, noting that his party’s position on the construction of the collector has remained consistent. During a summer meeting with Prime Minister Dritan Abazović, Assembly President Andrija Mandić, and Ambassador Johan Satler, he pledged not to engage in a media campaign if authorities were willing to engage with Botun’s residents to find a compromise.
Despite expressing a willingness to support projects beneficial to Podgorica, Knežević made it clear that he would oppose the current proposal, regardless of community support. He highlighted that residents of Botun are seeking a resolution but cannot achieve one if threatened by aggressive actions from the authorities. He remarked, “The government in Podgorica depends on Mayor Mujović and his readiness to contribute to de-escalating tensions and finding solutions that do not harm the people of Botun.”
Knežević reiterated that the DNP is not seeking to undermine the governing majority but rather that certain factions within the majority are attempting to discredit the DNP. He urged the public to assess why this is occurring, noting that DNP representatives have consistently supported European legislation and participated responsibly in various governmental processes, including the selection of key judicial figures.
He further asserted that the DNP’s resistance to actions that undermine national dignity and sovereignty is causing discomfort for some, which may explain the current crisis in Botun. Knežević stated, “I am not leading the protests in Botun; it is the entire village and united Zeta behind me. Should anything happen to me, these protests will not cease, as the people stand together, not as individuals.”
Reflecting on his past actions during protests, he remarked on his commitment to standing with the people, even at personal risk. Knežević expressed concerns about the influence of Ambassador Johan Satler, claiming he oversees various processes in Montenegro, from judicial appointments to political realignments. He accused the government of allowing Satler to operate above the Constitution, stating this reality needs to be openly addressed.
As the situation continues to unfold, Knežević emphasized that the DNP will support any projects that serve the interests of Podgorica and its residents, provided they align with the boundaries of the capital. He proposed that funding allocated for the construction of the collector could be redirected to a more suitable location within Podgorica, acknowledging the evident resistance from Zeta residents.
Knežević’s remarks underscore the ongoing struggle between local authorities and citizens over environmental issues and their implications for local governance. The DNP leader’s call for a referendum reflects a growing demand for democratic engagement in decisions that directly affect communities across Montenegro.
