Veteran Journalist Graham Brooks MBE Passes Away at 95

Graham Brooks, a celebrated journalist and former student of Churcher’s College, passed away at the age of 95. His extensive career spanned 44 years, primarily in local journalism, where he earned a reputation as a respected figure in the field.
Born in Petersfield, Brooks initially aspired to become a teacher. However, after discovering a lack of available training positions, he seized an opportunity at the Portsmouth-based Evening News, joining the staff as a trainee reporter. This pivotal decision marked the beginning of his illustrious career, which culminated in being awarded the MBE in 1993 for his contributions to journalism.
Early Life and Career
Graham Brooks attended Churcher’s College, where he met his future wife, Kay, who was studying at the nearby Petersfield Girls’ County High School. The couple married on August 15, 1951, at St Mary’s Church in Liss, surrounded by 100 family members and friends. Their marriage lasted an impressive 74 years, a testament to their shared commitment and partnership.
After starting his career in Petersfield and Midhurst, Brooks progressed to a sub-editor position at The News Centre in Portsmouth. His editorial journey advanced in 1961 when he became the editor of the Chichester Observer series. For two decades, from 1972 to 1992, he served as the group editor for several weekly publications under the Portsmouth News group, including the Petersfield Post, before retiring.
Community Engagement and Legacy
Beyond his editorial responsibilities, Brooks was deeply involved in numerous community organizations and sports activities. He played a vital role as one of the founders of the Chichester Area Talking News, an initiative aimed at providing audio news for visually impaired residents.
Brooks’s contributions extended beyond the newsroom, impacting the community he cherished. His dedication to journalism and community service has left a lasting legacy, one that will be remembered by those who knew him and those who benefited from his work.
His brother, Donald Brooks, pursued a career in education, eventually becoming the headmaster of Churcher’s College. Donald and his wife, June, remained in Petersfield, where the Brooks family roots run deep.
Graham Brooks’s passing marks the end of an era for local journalism, with many remembering him not only for his professional achievements but also for his kindness and commitment to community engagement.
