Minister Vojislav Šimun Addresses Healthcare Accountability in Montenegro
Minister of Health Vojislav Šimun emphasized the need for accountability in Montenegro’s healthcare system following the tragic death of a child in Bar. Speaking during a parliamentary session on March 15, 2025, Šimun assured that justice would be served and individual responsibilities would be clearly identified if negligence is found.
The minister responded to a series of questions regarding the healthcare system’s challenges, particularly after several recent fatalities, including a newborn in Niksic. He acknowledged the emotional toll these incidents take on families and the healthcare system at large. Šimun stated, “Each tragic outcome, whether manageable or unforeseen, is a painful event for families and the healthcare sector.”
Addressing specific inquiries from Boris Mugoša, a member of the Socialist Democratic Party, Šimun acknowledged the critical role of physiotherapists, stating they have been undervalued in Montenegro. He mentioned ongoing efforts to revise the collective agreement for healthcare workers to improve their financial status and working conditions.
In response to questions from Velimir Đokić of the New Serbian Democracy party about the rising number of infant deaths, Šimun stressed the importance of transparency in these situations. He noted that investigations into the recent fatalities would determine whether they stemmed from systemic issues or individual errors. “Justice will be served, and accountability will be established as necessary,” he asserted.
The minister also discussed the government’s initiatives to boost birth rates, highlighting efforts such as schools for pregnant women and increased access to fertility treatments. He pointed out that Montenegro has recently seen a positive natural increase in eight municipalities, a trend that he hopes will continue.
In light of the recent deaths, including two infants at the same hospital within two years, the pressure is mounting on Šimun to take responsibility. Acknowledging the scrutiny, he stated that all necessary procedures would be followed to uncover the truth and ensure accountability within the healthcare system.
The discussion also touched on financial challenges facing the healthcare sector, with Šimun addressing a reported shortfall of $30 million in the health fund for medications and medical supplies. He reassured the public that the government prioritizes securing necessary medications and that payments for services rendered would be managed appropriately, as has been customary in previous years.
As investigations into the recent tragedies continue, Minister Šimun’s commitment to accountability and reform will be critical in restoring public trust in Montenegro’s healthcare system.
