Childline Reports Surge in Calls as UK Students Face New School Year

As students across the United Kingdom prepare to return to school this month, Childline is witnessing a significant increase in calls from children expressing anxiety about the upcoming academic year. Many young people have voiced concerns about their appearance, academic pressures, and social interactions, with 34% of counselling sessions on these topics occurring in August and September alone.
Between April 2024 and March 2025, the NSPCC service conducted 1,812 counselling sessions focused on school-related anxiety. A 14-year-old girl from Wales shared her struggles with Childline, stating, “I really, really don’t want to go back to school – I worry what people will say about my body after the summer. I feel so ugly and guilty that I didn’t have the discipline to stick to a diet or lose any weight.”
This sentiment is echoed by many children who feel vulnerable and judged in school environments. In contrast, some young people expressed eagerness to return to school, citing the need to escape family tensions and reconnect with friends. A 15-year-old transgender boy highlighted the duality of emotions surrounding school, saying, “It’s been kinda tough not having much support over the holidays, so I’m actually looking forward to going back to school.”
Childline’s Director, Shaun Friel, emphasized the importance of addressing these feelings, stating, “While it’s completely normal to have concerns, young people must know they’re not alone and that help is available.” He encouraged anyone feeling overwhelmed to utilize their services, which are available 24/7.
Strategies for Coping with Back-to-School Anxiety
To support children during this transition, Childline has released various strategies for both parents and young people. For parents, listening to children’s concerns without immediately offering solutions can foster a supportive environment. Encouraging children to express their feelings through writing can also be beneficial, providing a tangible way to discuss worries and positives.
Parents are advised to help their children identify practical solutions to their anxieties and to remind them that adjustment to the new school year can take time. Engaging in enjoyable activities daily is another recommended strategy to alleviate anxiety.
Children themselves are encouraged to speak to trusted adults about their feelings. Writing down worries and hopes can serve as a useful exercise, and they should feel empowered to ask questions about school to clarify uncertainties. Additionally, utilizing tools like Childline’s online mood journal can help young people articulate their feelings effectively.
Childline’s Resources and Support
Childline is dedicated to providing support for anyone under the age of 19 in the UK. The organization offers a free, confidential service available via phone at 0800 1111 and through online chat. The charity also maintains an online community where users can engage in discussions, share experiences, and receive advice.
Through platforms like YouTube and social media, Childline provides further resources, including videos featuring guest YouTubers discussing various topics and expert advice on managing anxiety. The organization emphasizes the importance of online safety, urging young people to be cautious about what they share publicly.
As the new school year approaches, it is crucial for both parents and children to recognize that support is available. With the right tools and conversations, returning to school can be a positive experience for young people facing anxiety.
