A series of cultural events is set to unfold across Massachusetts this January, featuring exhibits, performances, and discussions that celebrate various artistic expressions. From photography in children’s literature to stand-up comedy, classical music, and historical commemorations, there is something for everyone.

Exhibits and Performances Highlight Artistic Diversity

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst will host “CLICK! Photographers Make Picture Books,” an exhibit running from January 17 to June 7. This showcase highlights the works of renowned photographer-illustrators, including Edward Steichen and Mo Willems, emphasizing the intersection of photography and children’s literature. The exhibit features over 90 photographic pieces alongside more than 20 rare children’s books dating back to the 1890s, highlighting the artistic potential within picture books. Families can engage in hands-on activities from January 14 to January 22, where they can create their own collage scrapbooks inspired by the exhibit.

In Great Barrington, the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center will present Indigo Comedy Night featuring comedian David Drake on January 17 at 20:00. Drake, known for his appearances on platforms like Comedy Central and HBO, promises an evening filled with humor and engaging storytelling. The event will feature café-style seating on a first-come, first-served basis, inviting audiences to enjoy a casual and entertaining night out.

Musical Celebrations and Historical Commemorations

On January 19, the Williams College Department of Music will host a concert featuring Gamelan Yowana Sari and the I/O Ensemble at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. Beginning at 15:00, this performance will present new compositions for Balinese gamelan, showcasing works by composers such as Michael Gordon and Evan Ziporyn. Gamelan Yowana Sari, a Balinese art ensemble, has garnered attention for their performances in notable festivals and their commitment to preserving traditional music.

In a nod to history, the Bidwell House Museum, along with the Monterey Historical Society and the Monterey Library, will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Henry Knox leading his Noble Train of Artillery through the Berkshires. Events will commence on January 16 and include exhibits, talks, and communal activities, inviting the public to learn about this significant historical event that occurred during the American Revolutionary War.

Finally, the Guild of Berkshire Artists will conduct a traditional painting class titled “Painting in Oils” with instructor Bob Watkins from January 20 to February 24. The class, held at Berkshire South in Great Barrington, will focus on color mixing and composition, encouraging participants of all skill levels to explore their creativity in a supportive environment.

These diverse events not only offer entertainment but also foster community engagement and appreciation for the arts. For more information on tickets and schedules, attendees are encouraged to check the respective venues’ websites.
