Nationwide Reveals Spending Habits as Customers Face Financial Strain
Nationwide Building Society has shared insights into customer spending habits, revealing how rising household bills are influencing financial decisions. Based on research conducted with 1,200 customers, the building society found that consumers are preparing to spend an average of £5,517 this year on long trips, alongside an expected £2,348 for short trips.
The survey indicates a significant shift in priorities, with 41 percent of respondents expressing a desire to treat themselves despite financial concerns. Conversely, 27 percent are postponing major purchases such as new cars or substantial home renovations. Additionally, 15 percent of those surveyed reported anxiety about unforeseen expenses.
Amid these financial pressures, many are adjusting their spending habits. The study revealed that 31 percent of consumers plan to reduce expenditure on dining out, while 24 percent intend to cook at home more frequently to save money. Fashion and clothing purchases will also see a decline, with 26 percent of respondents opting to spend less, and 24 percent planning to buy more second-hand items.
Travel remains a top priority for consumers in 2026, as the research suggests that leisure activities continue to hold significant value for many. EasyJet forecasts that the average Briton could spend as much as £3,051.90 on their main holiday in 2025, highlighting the importance of travel in consumer spending.
Financial Management Strategies Emerge
Mark Nalder, Service, Operations & Performance Director at Nationwide Building Society, commented on these findings, stating: “Undoubtedly, some consumers are putting off bigger purchases and replacing them with manageable luxuries due to financial worries or constraints. There is a degree of practicality to this as it balances enjoyment with caution. Many consumers still value making up for lost time since the pandemic, so leisure and travel remain high on people’s priority lists, even if budgets are squeezed.”
The research also highlighted emerging financial management strategies among consumers. Approximately 20 percent of respondents plan to establish a monthly budget, while 18 percent intend to track their spending using banking apps in 2026. Nalder emphasized the importance of saving, stating, “Saving should also be a big priority for our customers, and the Nationwide app is a simple, easy, convenient, and secure way to manage your current and savings accounts in one place.”
As consumers navigate these financial challenges, Nationwide’s research underscores the delicate balance between enjoying life’s pleasures and maintaining financial responsibility.
