Conor Gallagher Joins Tottenham as First Major Signing Post-Levy
Conor Gallagher is set to make a significant impact at Tottenham Hotspur after completing a transfer from Atletico Madrid. The deal, reportedly valued at £35 million, marks Gallagher as the first major signing in the club’s new era following the departure of long-time chairman Daniel Levy.
Gallagher’s Transfer Journey
The 25-year-old England international had been on Tottenham’s radar since the summer of 2022. Manager Ange Postecoglou was eager to bring Gallagher to North London, but Levy’s decision to veto the move prevented it from happening at the time. Tottenham had also pursued Gallagher in the summer of 2023 but chose to sign James Maddison from Leicester City instead.
After spending time at Atletico Madrid, Gallagher is now poised to join Tottenham. He arrived in London on January 2, 2025, to undergo a medical examination, with expectations that he will sign a five-and-a-half-year contract. The timing of this transfer is crucial, as Gallagher is anticipated to make his debut in Tottenham’s upcoming match against West Ham this Saturday.
Impact on the Team
Gallagher’s arrival provides a significant boost to Tottenham, particularly as manager Thomas Frank deals with injury challenges within the squad. Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur recently underwent surgery on a hamstring injury sustained during a match against Bournemouth, which ended in a 3-2 defeat for Spurs. A club statement confirmed Bentancur’s surgery and stated, “We’re all with you, Lolo.”
While Gallagher’s signing is a pivotal moment for Tottenham, the club is also close to finalizing a deal for Souza, a 19-year-old Brazilian left-back, after agreeing to a £12.9 million fee with Santos. Souza is expected to travel to London shortly, although he is not scheduled to undergo a medical on the same day as Gallagher.
Gallagher’s transfer signifies a new chapter for Tottenham, as the team looks to strengthen its roster and improve performance on the pitch. The departure of Levy, who led the club for nearly a quarter of a century, has opened up opportunities for fresh signings and a shift in strategy. While Mason Melia, a young Irish striker, was technically the first signing of this new era, Gallagher’s transfer is being viewed as a key acquisition moving forward.
As the January transfer window unfolds, eyes will be on Tottenham to see how these changes impact their ambitions in the league.
