A woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for deceiving her best friend over a span of 15 years, posing as a fictional boyfriend and daughter. Claire Gilbert, 37, was convicted of stalking and fraud at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, where evidence revealed a long-term psychological manipulation of her victim.

Gilbert’s deception began in 2010 when her friend moved in to help her escape an abusive relationship. Under the guise of a man named Carl Murphy, Gilbert fabricated an elaborate story that included a fake daughter, “Katie.” This ruse allowed her to manipulate her friend into believing in a false reality where she was madly in love and even contributed financially to the fabricated life.

Throughout the years, the victim was led to believe that Carl and his daughter were real. She sent gifts, letters, and money, fully immersed in the deception. According to the Manchester Evening News, Gilbert even created a complex backstory for Carl, which included various family members who were also fictional.

The elaborate scheme began to unravel in 2019 when Greater Manchester Police conducted a search of Gilbert’s phone. They discovered a voice-changing app that was used to maintain the illusion of Carl. The victim learned that her supposed partner had been her best friend all along. This discovery came as a shock, as she had believed in Gilbert’s numerous fabricated stories, which included claims of abuse against her.

In an emotional victim impact statement, the woman expressed her devastation, stating, “I discovered the last 15 years of my life were a fabrication and I was living a lie.” She described how Gilbert’s actions had taken away her future and financially impacted her life. “For 15 years I was catfished, lied to, and psychologically tortured,” she added.

Gilbert’s actions went beyond psychological manipulation; she also committed fraud by opening multiple credit cards in her friend’s name. This additional layer of deceit contributed to her guilty plea for four counts of fraud, alongside the stalking charge.

The court’s decision to impose a three-year sentence reflects the severity of Gilbert’s actions and the profound impact on her victim’s life. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of online deception and the importance of safeguarding personal relationships against manipulation.

Gilbert’s sentencing underscores the need for awareness regarding the psychological effects of catfishing, as well as the legal ramifications for those who engage in such deceptive practices.
