Tulsi Gabbard Critiques Slow Progress Against Deep State Elements

Tulsi Gabbard, the former U.S. Representative and current director of national intelligence, expressed significant frustration with the perceived sluggishness in tackling entrenched “deep state” elements within the federal government. Speaking at a student conference hosted by the conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA in Tampa, Florida, on March 12, 2023, Gabbard highlighted resistance from long-standing bureaucratic interests that she claims obstruct President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Her comments came in the wake of the Trump administration’s controversial decision not to release documents related to the so-called “Epstein list.” This decision has sparked criticism and speculation, particularly concerning alleged high-profile associates of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The administration has denied the existence of any such document, fueling concerns about the influence of deep state actors.
Gabbard stated, “They exist within every single agency of the federal government and the national security state and the propaganda media.” She added, “I feel the same frustration that I see many of you expressing [online]. Why aren’t things going faster? Why aren’t we getting results more quickly? The deep state is fighting us every step of the way.”
The remarks followed a speech by former Trump campaign strategist Steve Bannon, who urged the audience to remain patient for the eventual “full release” of documents related to the Epstein case. Bannon emphasized that Epstein’s connections could reveal crucial information about various institutions, stating, “Epstein is a key that picks the lock on so many things – not just individuals, but also institutions.”
Epstein died by apparent suicide in 2019 while in federal custody, awaiting trial on serious sex trafficking charges. The ongoing refusal by the Trump administration to disclose additional records has drawn criticism, particularly from Trump allies like Bannon, who argue it demonstrates the persistent influence of deep state elements.
In defending the Attorney General Pam Bondi’s handling of the Epstein matter, Trump asserted that the notion of the Epstein files had been exaggerated or fabricated by his political opponents. This ongoing narrative surrounding the Epstein case continues to intertwine with broader discussions about the deep state and its impact on the political landscape.
As the debate unfolds, Gabbard’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among some conservatives that significant obstacles remain in the quest to challenge entrenched interests within the federal government, suggesting that the struggle against the deep state is far from over.
