Trump and Putin Set for Crucial Talks in Hungary Amid Ukraine Crisis
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to hold high-stakes face-to-face talks in Hungary, marking a significant development in international relations. Following a phone call on September 28, 2023, Trump described the conversation as “very productive,” indicating that teams from Washington and Moscow will convene next week to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The upcoming meeting is pivotal, occurring as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares for his visit to the White House, where discussions will likely center on the potential transfer of advanced military equipment, including Tomahawk missiles. The US president has not disclosed a specific date for the meeting in Budapest, but the Kremlin has stated that preparations will begin immediately.
Zelensky’s visit is expected to focus heavily on military support for Ukraine. Upon arriving in Washington, he suggested that Russia’s eagerness to engage in dialogue is linked to the looming threat of Tomahawk missiles. He remarked, “Moscow is rushing to resume dialogue as soon as it hears about Tomahawks,” implying that the prospect of such weaponry has raised alarms within the Kremlin.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump elaborated on his discussions with Putin, mentioning that trade relations would be a topic of conversation once the war in Ukraine concludes. He announced that senior advisors from both countries will meet at an undisclosed location next week, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the American delegation. Trump confirmed he will brief Zelensky on the outcomes of his call with Putin during the Ukrainian leader’s visit.
Trump expressed optimism about a potential in-person meeting with Putin occurring “within two weeks.” However, when questioned about the provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, he exhibited caution. “We can’t deplete our stockpile,” he said, acknowledging the necessity of these weapons for national defense.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Olga Stefanishyna, criticized Russia for conducting missile strikes on Ukraine just hours before the Trump-Putin call. She argued that such actions reveal Moscow’s true intentions regarding peace and called for stronger sanctions and enhanced military support for Ukraine. In a statement to CBS, she characterized Russia’s tactics as “terror and exhaustion” and stressed the need for long-range capabilities in response to ongoing aggression.
Adding to the discourse, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban praised the planned meeting between Trump and Putin, calling it “great news for the peace-loving people of the world.” He has previously advocated for a diplomatic approach towards Russia, urging European leaders to pursue negotiations rather than perpetuating conflict.
As both leaders prepare for their meeting, the international community watches closely, anticipating how these discussions might influence the trajectory of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical landscape.
