Shotley Bridge Nursery School Teaches Road Safety with Joy
As Road Safety Week approaches, from November 16-22, 2025, Shotley Bridge Nursery School is highlighting its innovative approach to teaching essential life skills through real-world experiences. Located in the heart of the community, the school integrates road safety lessons into its everyday curriculum, fostering a deeper understanding among young learners.
At Shotley Bridge Nursery School, educators believe that children thrive when their natural curiosity is nurtured. This philosophy drives the school’s approach to early childhood education, with practical learning experiences designed to engage students meaningfully. Road safety is a key focus, as children participate in interactive outings where they can practice these vital skills.
During daily excursions, the children engage in enjoyable yet informative road safety activities. Central to this experience is the beloved song, “Stop, Look and Listen,” led by Ms. Thornton, the school’s Communication Ambassador and Pre-School Room Leader. The use of music is a powerful tool in early education, as it aids retention and understanding through structure, repetition, rhythm, and melody. This method allows children to form strong connections that enhance memory and language skills.
The song “Stop, Look and Listen” not only makes learning memorable but also accessible to all children. Even those who may struggle with verbal communication can participate through actions and non-verbal cues. Engaging in eye contact and social interactions reinforces the safety messages being taught. By incorporating singing, children learn to practice safe behaviors, such as standing behind the curb and checking for traffic before crossing.
These daily routines empower children, instilling confidence and a sense of responsibility. By embedding road safety lessons into their everyday lives, the nursery school is not just teaching children to cross the street safely; it is cultivating a lifelong understanding of safety, mindfulness, and independence.
The commitment of Shotley Bridge Nursery School to early education and community safety is evident in its efforts to teach road safety in a fun and engaging manner. As Road Safety Week approaches, the school invites families and community members to witness how it is making a difference in early education—one step, and safe crossing, at a time.
