Moray Libraries Launch New Research Tools for Community Use
Moray Council libraries have introduced two significant research tools aimed at enhancing public access to historical and genealogical information. Library members can now utilize the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, empowering users to delve into a wealth of information from the past.
The British Newspaper Archive is now available at local libraries, allowing members to conduct free searches through millions of newspaper articles spanning various time periods and regions. This resource offers users an opportunity to explore historical events and trends through the lens of past journalism. Accessing these archives requires only a library membership card.
In addition, the Ancestry Library Edition is also accessible in all Moray libraries. This tool enables users to trace their family history by providing access to vital UK records. These include records for births, deaths, and marriages, as well as military service data, UK census records, and parish records. This resource is particularly valuable for individuals interested in genealogy or family research.
Library users can take advantage of free access to library computers, although booking in advance is advisable to ensure availability. Alternatively, patrons can connect to public Wi-Fi and explore these resources on their personal devices.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about these new offerings. “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community,” she stated. “Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The introduction of these resources marks a significant step forward in promoting access to historical and genealogical information within the Moray community. As libraries adapt to changing technology, they continue to serve as vital hubs for knowledge and research. With these new tools, residents can engage more deeply with their heritage and the history that has shaped their local and national narratives.
