SNP Council Leader Resigns After Embezzlement Charges Filed

A significant political shift has occurred in Perth and Kinross after council leader Grant Laing resigned following charges of embezzlement. The allegations suggest that Laing engaged in the fraudulent activity over an eight-year period, from 2017 to 2025. The 63-year-old Scottish National Party (SNP) councillor stepped down from his leadership role, citing “personal reasons,” as confirmed by an official statement on the council’s website.
As the news broke, Laing also announced his departure from the SNP, opting to serve as an independent councillor moving forward. An unnamed source within the SNP expressed that the situation has taken the party by surprise, adding, “As there are live criminal proceedings, we can’t comment any further at this time.”
Leadership Transition Amid Serious Allegations
In the wake of Laing’s resignation, Eric Drysdale, the council’s deputy leader, will assume the role of interim leader until October 29, 2025. Drysdale remarked, “Grant’s decision has come as a shock to all of his councillor colleagues, but we shall all step up our efforts to fill the gap his departure will leave.” He acknowledged Laing’s commitment to the council over the past three and a half years, emphasizing a vision for Perth and Kinross where residents can live free from poverty and inequality.
Drysdale later issued a formal statement, stating, “These are very serious matters, and it is right that due process takes its course. In the meantime, my priority as acting leader is to ensure stability and continuity for the Council, its staff, and the communities we serve.” The council is focusing on delivering essential services to the residents of Perth and Kinross during this transitional period.
A spokesperson for the council confirmed Laing’s resignation, stating, “Councillor Grant Laing has notified us of his resignation as council leader for personal reasons. He will continue to sit as an independent councillor.” The council plans to confirm a new leader and discuss any committee changes at the upcoming full council meeting.
Criminal Proceedings Underway
According to Police Scotland, a 63-year-old man has been charged with embezzlement related to incidents occurring over several years in the Perth area. A report on the matter will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for further proceedings.
The situation has garnered significant media attention, particularly as it unfolds within the context of ongoing political and social challenges in Scotland. As the council prepares for a leadership transition, the implications of Laing’s resignation and subsequent charges will likely resonate throughout the community and the party.
As this case develops, local officials and residents alike are watching closely, anticipating how the council will respond to these serious allegations and what the future holds for the leadership of Perth and Kinross Council.
